About the Author
Gordon Cameron earned his degree in Physics at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. He has 25 years engineering experience in both research and development and high volume manufacturing in the semiconductor industry working in the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and the United States. He has published many technical papers on plasma etching systems used in the manufacture of semiconductor devices. His main focus has been on technical problem solving and troubleshooting. During his 16 years with Intel Corporation, he taught numerous TRIZ classes to engineers and has successfully applied TRIZ to many technical problems. Elected President of the Arizona TRIZ Association in 2007 Gordon has pursued the further development and application of TRIZ as well as other approaches to creative problem solving.

Accessible

As a non-scientist new to TRIZ, I was concerned that Trizics would be too advanced and convoluted to understand. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I found it to be accessible and understandable. It contains numerous step-by-step logical examples and illustrations. I recommend it to anyone interested in the topic.

Review of TRIZICS

Great book, extremely comprehensive. No one else has produced a book this in depth across such a large body of knowledge in the domain of TRIZ, (Russian acronym for the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) a very informative and useful book. I also noted that has also many very informed, and learned contributors who have really helped to make this a really strong reference book, let alone text book for teaching and learning this inventive methodology.

It does justice to many areas of TRIZ that just aren't covered in the depth I have found elsewhere. In reviewing this book I really enjoyed the templates that showed the flow of where and when to use the different tools, again not something that I've seen covered in other TRIZ books in such an easy to use format. I really liked the flow chart, the TRIZICS roadmap, it is better than any other TRIZ tool use roadmap that I've seen publicly presented.
No other book on TRIZ does this to near the degree that you'll find in this book. The descriptions that Mr. Cameron has put in here really add granularity where it is needed in a comprehensive and useful manner.

I can't recommend this book high enough to instructors, teachers, students, whether they be a beginner or advanced.

Convincing common-sense theory of fiction

Mimesis As Make-Believe is one of the most intellectually satisfying books I've read in a long time. Walton begins by exploring some obvious -- but too often neglected -- questions about imagination, fictionality, and make-believe. He then introduces several theories of fiction (from the analytic tradition), and some theories of the ontology fictional beings, until finally introducing his own theory as a solution to the dilemmas others leave unsolved.
Following in the tradition of Wittgenstein and Derrida, Walton argues that fiction comes from playful use of signifiers, what Wittgenstein would call "language games" or "language-play." When we experience fiction, according to Walton, we "act as if" the fictional world were real. Walton introduces an epistemology of fiction, with the operator "it is fictional" functioning much like the operator "it is true" functions in our world -- but with the strong admonition that being fictional is not the same thing as being true.
This philosophy of fiction as a way for humans to "act as if" is appealing on several grounds. It fits well with common sense notions of fiction, and unlike many competing theories, does not force us to go against our pretheoretical ways of talking about fiction. We do not need to commit ourselves to fictional universes housing fictional beings, but we also do not need to say that any statement involving fictional beings is false. Everything is worked out quite precisely, true to the analytic tradition, with a few brief forays into symbolic logic. But unlike many analytic philosopherse, Walton still takes art and fiction seriously, and does not dismiss them as pathological forms of signification.
Overall, this book is entertaining, well-written, an enjoyable read, and intellectually groundbreaking. It provides a way to think about fiction that, for the first time, obviates the need for heroic assumptions or unappealing ontological constructs.

GERALD F. BERNARD, CPA, is coprincipal of Bernard & Stallman, P.C., a Phoenix-based accounting firm that specializes in tax services. A former IRS agent who for five years performed audits on individuals, small businesses, and trusts, Mr. Bernard now uses his IRS expertise to serve his clients. He is a past chairman of the Arizona Tax Legislation Committee of the ASCPA and served two terms as chairman of the Audit and Compliance Committee of the Arizona Forum for Improvement of Taxation.

DANIEL J. BARAN, CPA, is a principal of Daniel J. Baran, P.C., a firm specializing in tax controversy, tax planning, and tax compliance. A former senior tax staff member with Ernst & Young LLP, he was a founding board member of the Arizona Forum for Improvement of Taxation. He is a past chairman of the Arizona Society of CPAs' Internal Revenue Service Committee and the Arizona Department of Revenue Tax Liaison Committee.

Great source for reprints of old tax forms

If your looking for an extensive reprinting of 1995 tax forms and instructions, or a handy glossary of definitions such as "Internal Revenue Service", "Deed", "Will" and even the always confusing multi-syllabic "Representative", you'll find it here in spades. Of the 284 pages in the book, the first 111 is full of boilerplate advice that you might get free from the IRS, the remaining 173 pages is reprints of IRS forms, their instructions, and the glossary.

Great value for an Intro to Soils textbook!

Cheers to the Soil Science Socisty of America for putting together this fine book. It should be of interest to students, gardeners, and those who wish to learn about the importance and significance of soils.

I'm excited to be using this as my textbook for my Intro to Soil Science course in the fall. I've been frustrated with the other available Soils textbooks, which tend to be either way too simplistic or way overboard (encyclopedic) for an intro level course. This book seems to hit the nail right on the head! Not only that, but it is interesting to read, and the cost to students is VERY reasonable ($40!). This seems to be the only soils text out there with full color images, graphics, and maps, and they are abundant and well done. I'm sure I will have suggestions to improve the book after using it. In fact, I already have a few: add a glossary and an index. I'd also like to see sections on soil water and one on soil temperature, too, but until then I will cover that material using other means. No Intro to Soils textbook out there seems to be just right, but this one is closest, in my opinion.

Best Intro Soil textbook available

I'd give this a 4.5 if that were an option. This is not only a great textbook, but it makes a fine coffee table book as well - it's loaded with full color images, maps, etc. and is very accessible. I was so excited when I got it that I ran around to everyone I could find in our department to show-and-tell. It is also a fraction of the cost of most textbooks, making it a great deal for students. I love that there are glossaries at the end of each chapter. I think it's fantastic that the last chapter focuses on careers in soil science. My only criticism so far is that there is no index. what? It really needs an index. Other than that, it's fantastic.

"Myofascia has been quite a buzz word in recent times and there has been much written about the understandings and treatment methods for these 'newly (re) discovered' structures. My main concern was that some of these text lacked an in depth understanding of the subject and did little to explain how fascia fitted into the clinical puzzle. I'm happy to say that this book is excellent and addresses all my concerns! Dominik Irnich, MD, is Head of the Interdisciplinary Pain Centre at the University of Munich and Visiting Lecturer at various Universities and Intuitions across Germany, Europe and the USA.
Dr Irnich holds a Certificate of Acupuncture, a Certificate of Chinese Massage and a Certificate of Qigong (China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Centre, WHO Collaborating Centre of Traditional Chinese Medicine), a Certificate of Acupuncture (A, B) of the German Medical Acupuncture Association (DÄGfA) and a Certificate of Natural Medicine (Naturopathy) of KneippÄrztebund and is a practicing acupuncturist.
Dr. Irnich is a member of faculty at different institutions: German Medical Acupuncture Association (DÄGfA), Acupuncture Course at Julius-Maximilians-University of Regensburg, KneippÄrztebund, Structural Acupuncture Course for Physicians at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA.
His fields of research include basic science research (physiology of peripheral nociception including acupuncture) and clinical research on acupuncture and pain (research methodology, clinical effectiveness). Dr Irnich has published 34 original papers, 19 chapters in different textbooks, proceedings, reviews and editorials, 43 abstracts of poster and oral presentations and has given more than 100 invited lectures.

Need companion copy of National Directory for Catechesis

I read the General Directory for Catechesis as part of a seminar class. I had an instructor and fellow students to help me read the GDC and make sense of it. Reflecting the ideas from this book with the National Directory of Catechesis was critical to my understanding of the Church's international direction for religious education. The GDC tells you the Church's international plan for religious education, and the NDC applies it to the American situation. I recommend buying them together. That said I was pleased to learn the Church puts adult catechesis above all else and considers all other religious education activities to radiate from the primary emphasis on grown-ups!

A MUST resource if you teach the faith

I saw that one reviewer said it was "dense" reading. I agree. But it is dense because it is so full of wonderful material. Take it slow. Read and "chew" it meditatively. Drink it in deeply. It gives the big picture on teaching the faith. It's is more than just teaching weekly CCD or RCIA class. It is about witnessing Christ to people who need to hear our message. It's easy to develop a limited (dare I say parochial?) view based on our own little world. This general directory gives a much bigger/broader picture. A world-wide, centuries-long, effort to share the "good news" of salvation. Thought provoking, challenging, just like our faith!

Must Read for any Film Student

Jay's book is a must read for any student of cinematography looking to deepen their understanding of the craft. Jay has the ability to take complex concepts and to break them into easily digestible examples and references written in a very easy to understand style. I use both of Jay's books as reference texts in courses I teach in cinematography for that very reason. The chapters he has written on Optics are an amazing resource on a topic seldom explored in cinematography text in great detail. I also love that the book touch on practical exercises like tying knots that every filmmaker can use. The book is littered with great illustrations, charts, and photos that really add value to the content. I highly recommend Behind the Lens!

AMAZING RESOURCE!

Jay is the best teacher in these subjects I have had the pleasure to read and talk to!
His extensive experience and research is absolutely incredible and the fact that he writes these books to share his knowledge in such a simplified way that can get through practically anyone is even more admirable. After reading his first book, he now unconditionally has me recommending his literature (including articles on several very recognized film magazines) to all cinematography students I have taught and worked with.
I cant recommend this piece enough, I actually now carry it in my bag every time I go on set as a great resource for creative approaches as much as a technical guide.
You wont regret buying this one and reading it over and over! Great investment!

The best resource for anyone wanting to be a Cinematographer. Jay not only talks about the process he explains the why and how. If you want to learn more about being a DP and become a better and more technical film maker this is the best book on the market.
