A Sweet Story

My three year old daughter loves to be read to any chance she gets so she was beyond excited to see One Sweet Race from Disney's Wreck-it-Ralph. They say not to judge a book by it's cover but the look of delight and excitement on Paige's face when I handed it to her begs to differ!

This book is adorable with colorful and creative illustrations with equally creative characters. From their names to the way that they speak and the things that they do, these characters are unique and memorable.

The story is about Rancis (who it's really hard not to call Francis) and he wants to win a Sugar Rush Cup in a race. His kart is made entirely out of candy. My five year old didn't want to hear the story but as soon as he heard me reading about all the candy in the story, he came running!

Candy is a special treat my kids don't get often so to them, a place with candy everywhere is simply magical. When Rancis runs into trouble with his first kart, Valellope shows up and helps him build a new one. They work together to make it the best they can which is a testament of working together, true friendship and not giving up on your dreams.

One Sweet Race is magical and fun and my kids now both request to hear it over and over again.

Great book but a wrong character name

Would have given it five stars but one of the characters name is wrong. Writer keeps referring to Candlehead as Minty. My six year old is obsessed with Sugar Rush so he new right away that is was incorrect and pointed it out to me. Otherwise, he loves the book.

The best self-study book series I've seen.

A very good self-teaching book (ESPECIALLY WHEN PURCHASED WITH THE ACCOMPANYING CD).

I used Alfred's books to learn how to play and bought them again to relearn after many years of not playing. The books explain a lot in way of how to learn the keyboard by doing and not just memorizing. The selection of Copyright free music is sometimes boring as you go through the series but it is well worth the trip because as you go, you learn to recognize chords in both the left and right hands. Arpeggios are explained and used in the lessons.
There are not a lot of scales unless you buy the separate books which you should if you want to get serious. There is no replacement for a good teacher, but if you want to get to a point where you can go to a proper instructor, you'll have the theory down already and a good heads up to approach a more serious study of music.
The series of books in the Adult line are easy to understand and have a page of practice then a page of music to apply the hand positions and techniques to.
There are a lot of method lessons out there but Alfred's seems to be the best of the lot for studying by yourself. The first time I had an instructor, this time I'm relearning on my own with the same books and I still find them friendly and approachable.
This review is for the entire line of Adult products including the additional lesson and theory books. Well worth the money.

Great Book for Adults Looking to Learn

I'm in my mid-fifties learning or should I say re-learning how to play the piano. I took lessons as a kid and hated it so much that I finally convinced my parents to let me stop after three years. I went on to teach myself how to play a few other instruments somewhat proficiently, but lately found myself wanting to give the piano another try.

This book is fantastic. It starts you out slowly but moves along at a comfortable pace, with each lesson building on the previous one. I find the results so satisfying that I now actually look forward to the time I get to play the piano.

Alfred also has available accompanying song books one can buy that are tied directly to this lesson book. These books are very helpful and inexpensive. More importantly, at the top of each page they tell you which page in the lesson book you should be at before attempting a song in the song book. I bought a couple of them and find it a very rewarding experience while at the same time reinforcing the lessons.

Two suggestions I would make. First, get the book with the CD. Mine did not come with one but there are lots of YouTube videos of varying quality that at least show you how a song should sound. Secondly, once you feel that you've completed a lesson or learned a particular song, play it along with a metronome. You will be surprised at what a difference it will make with your playing.

I bought this with no piano background, but with an understanding of music theory provided by guitar lessons. I now like playing the piano as much as I do guitar. This book definitely strengthened my sense of rhythm, and conditioned my hands just enough so that I can play a melody over chords, or sometimes two melodies simultaneously.

Some correlated material is necessary, however, as the book progresses pretty quickly by itself. The songs are good and you might be tempted to turn the pages too quickly (as I did) without first practicing the correlated material the book recommends.

But don't sweat it you decide not to dive in with several books. You'll get something out of just this book, and the piano will grow on you no matter how serious you are when you play. You just gotta play.

Pamela Minix is a competitive athlete, has studied under some of the world's leaders in neuroscience and biomechanics, has recovered from a life-threatening illness and has led discoveries in neuromechanical connections. She is the case-study, the student, the miracle and the scientist. And now, she is the author too. Her combination of innovative studies and personal experience gives her unusual biomechanical insight, attracting clientele from Canada's volleyball and hockey teams, Mexico's figure skating team and the US Olympic triathlon. She served as a biomechanical specialist in the Olympics and is now teaching her philosophies in Universities. Residing in San Diego, Pamela runs a performance training facility.

Fantastic and very insightful!

"I've been reading exercise books for years and as a practitioner of corrective exercise, I've read my share of text books on the subject. "Beyond Exercise" by Pamela Minix was a complete surprise.

Pamela shares the intimate details of her debilitating illness and the process she used to bring herself back from death's door to the vibrant athlete and 2003 National Mountain Bike Champion. Pam, not only inspires, but gives us the tools for a mind body journey of self-healing.

She makes the connection between neuromuscular imbalances and chronic pain. She does a splendid job breaking down the fundamentals of biomechanics and providing some of the most effective corrective exercises I've seen. In fact, I was so impressed I asked Pam to become my personal biomechanics therapist. I've not been disappointed!"

A moving story and more

The author tells her personal
story including an illness,
coming of age, father
daughter tensions, her
professional career as a
corrective exercise specialist
and her sportive career as a
high impact athlete.
Embedded in this story, she
describes a body and mind
program designed by herself
which focuses on
everybody's own
responsibility for his health.
The aim of this program is to
align body and soul by
actively eliminating mental,
environmental and physical
imbalances from all aspects
of one's life. An integral part
of this program is a set of
corrective exercises that are
illustrated with both graphics
and case studies mainly
taken from the author's
experience as a corrective
exercise practioneer.
An ambitious scope for a
single book.
While I enjoyed reading the
(moving and exciting)
personal story and appreciate
the motto of being
responsible for my own
health, there are several
points of criticism to be
raised. I suppose most of
them could have been
overcome by the work of a
professional corrector. Most
importantly, the author tries
to put too much content into
one and the same book, her
personal story, the exercise
manual, and personal stories
of her clients. Thereby she
sometimes loses focus and
the orgamization of the book
becomes confusing.
Futhermore it is repetitive
and unfortunately even has
many formal flaws such as
unfinished sentences and
spelling errors. I was also a
bit disappointed when I
discovered that the book
does not really help me to
learn what biomechanics is
about.
Buy this book when
- You want to read a moving
and exciting personal story
- You want to have a
complete body set of
corrective exercises with
precise instructions
- You agree with the motto
that everybody is responsible
for his own health.
Do not buy this book if
- You are not willing to pay
(the kindle price) for a book
that is more in the state of a
manuscript ready to be
reviewed by an editor than in
the state of a published book

Fundamentals of Track and Field

I was happy with this book as soon as I opened the front cover. I am a new track coach who "only has a clue" about track from what I have observed from my star athlete daughter. I am pleased with this book because it has a lot of drawings which show good form in executing running, throwing, and jumping events. It is the perfect book for elementary school, middle school track athletes. It gives coaching tips after every explaination, common errors and corrections, and lots of drills to help reinforce the new skills the students learn. I highly recommend it for the beginning track coach, or the old track coach who is getting stale and needs new games and drills to keep track fun.

The coaching tips are of tremendous value to those who work with athletes. The illustrations that show how to perform each event are excellent for visual learners. A great book for beginners

I am a middle school track coach and I've found this book very helpful in explaining the basics of all the track and field events. Carr also offers various activities to gradually develop the necessary skills for each event. Some of the technique motion pictures are slightly incorrect but I'd highly recommend this book for anybody just starting in track coaching
