In 1987, Dr. Benjamin Carson gained worldwide recognition for his part in the first successful separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head. Carson pioneered again in a rare procedure known as a hemispherectomy, giving children without hope a second chance at life through a daring operation in which he literally removes one half of their brain. From the Publisher

In 1987, Dr. Benjamin Carson gained worldwide recognition for his part in the first successful separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head. The extremely complex and delicate operation, five months in the planning and twenty-two hours in the execution, involved a surgical plan that Carson helped initiate.

Carson pioneered again in a rare procedure known as hemispherectomy, giving children without hope a second chance at life through a daring operation in which he literally removed one half of their brain.

But such breakthroughs aren't unusual for Ben Carson. He's been beating the odds since he was a child.

Raised in inner-city Detroit by a mother with a third grade education, Ben lacked motivation. He had terrible grades. And a pathological temper threatened to put him in jail. But Sonya Carson convinced her son that he could make something of his life, even though everything around him said otherwise.

Trust in God, a relentless belief in his own capabilities, and sheer determination catapulted Ben from failing grades to the top of his class--and beyond to a Yale scholarship . . . the University of Michigan Medical School . . . and finally, at age 33, the directorship of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Today, Dr. Ben Carson holds twenty honorary doctorates and is the possessor of a long string of honors and awards, including the Horatio Alger Award, induction into the "Great Blacks in Wax" Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, and an invitation as Keynote Speaker at the 1997 President's National Prayer Breakfast.

Gifted Hands is the riveting story of one man's secret for success, tested against daunting odds and driven by an incredible mindset that dares to take risks. This inspiring autobiography takes you into the operating room to witness surgeries that made headlines around the world--and into the private mind of a compassionate, God-fearing physician who lives to help others. Through it all shines a humility, quick wit, and down-to-earth style that make this book one you won't easily forget. Dr. Benjamin Carson is director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He lives with his wife, Candy, and three sons in West Friendship, Maryland.

Contagious inspiration and motivational drive
By QUEEN_OF_EVERYTHING
GIFTED HANDS, an autobiographical look into the life of one of the best neurosurgeons in the U. S. of A, is so unbelievably inspirational and poignant. If 100 people simultaneously read this book, I assure you at least one of them would walk away a changed person! I know Ben Carson has changed me. From now on, I'm vowing to do my absolute best. This year of homeschooling has given me many opportunities to "slack off" as one might say - I've taken a few of those opportunities. Even though I ended up with mostly As, I'm vowing to give my all into my academic performance next year. Ben Carson's motivational drive is absolutely contagious!
Benjamin Carson, M.D started out on the mean Detroit streets. His father had to leave the family after it was found he was practically living a double life: he had a girlfriend and another family while married to Ben's mother. While his mother assured him the family would be fine, they had to struggle to make ends meet. Yet all the while, she kept pushing and pushing Ben to be the best he could possibly be. All the while, she knew he had it in him to get out of the Detroit ghetto in which they lived. All the while, she knew he'd make something of himself. And he did.
We see an amazing transformation from a skeptical kid, unsure of life, to an intelligent neurosurgeon with a heart of gold - so much so that he can't help but break down and cry when surgery results in the death of a patient. He is a person who made the best of his education, as well as his college years. He went from being the best to simply doing his best and can be regarded as an inspiration to all because his standard of life he began with wasn't as favorable as many rich families who have attended Ivy League colleges for generations. In his case, he along with his older brother, Curtis, were the first in the family to attend colleges. Curtis ended up at University of Michigan - Ann Arbor and Ben enrolled at Yale University, where he met his wife, Candy.
Ben's beginnings were certainly not easy. Signs of determination showed as young as the age of 10. He started out as the "class dummy" in school, frequently getting every single question on his math tests wrong. But then, through hard work and a lot of reading at the local library, plus a new presciption for glasses, he expanded his knowledge in every subject. Soon, "good" wasn't good enough. Ben was driven to be the best. In fact, he was so driven that he won a full scholarship to the renowned Yale University.
God has clearly played a pivotal role in Ben's life. Before operating, he always prays to the Lord. But one life experience in particular especially is one I won't soon forget. Ben feared flunking a Yale exam and knew last-minute cramming would do him no good. As he slept, he dreamt of the mathematical facts and figures and equations. The next day, he nervously proceeded to take the exam and realized many of the questions had been in his prior dream! After a lot of worrying, Ben scored a 97 on the exam. He knew it was God's way of helping him.
What I most enjoy about this autobiography is the way in which Ben addresses the readers. Whether his audience ranges from the age of 13 to the age of 99, either age should enjoy it. Clearly, Ben is a brilliant genius. He speaks eloquently, yet he doesn't throw in the "big words" he could probably use if he chose to. Instead, his story is told through simple language that anyone can understand.
Ben Carson ought to be regarded as a role model for today's youth. Those not on the right path to a successful future could especially benefit, as a book like this could assist in a serious straightening out of priorities. As I mentioned before, Ben's motivational drive is contagious and inspiring! This down-to-earth doctor's story is really meant for everyone, teens and adults alike.

If you can believe, you can achieve--is Ben Carson
By Courtney Diddle, Chemical Engineer
Anyone having trials in their life, will find this book a positive uplift. I found myself identifing with Ben, when he was faced with the first chemistry final at Yale. The sense of divine intervention on his behalf in regards to the test and his acknowledgement of God as the source was/is a pivot point. Without a high grade at that key point, Ben Carson, probably would not have become the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins at age 33. The power of God awaits anyone needing the service of the brillant mind and "Gifted Hands" of Dr. Ben Carson. The thrill of his success comes through when reading the book. You too can join his journey and visualize and vocalize what you too may be. Guidance for becoming a better person is being lived out in the life of one, Ben Carson, M.D. Thank you, GOD for such a man, a living example.

A Gifted Neurosurgeon's Biography
By David Graham
Dr. Ben Carson is living proof that we are NOT mere products of our environments. He overcame a broken home, bad temper, and racial inequality to become a great man, loving father, and famous Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD. In this well paced, informative biography, Carson speaks about the different goals he set for himself throughout his productive life and how he, through patience, hard work, and faith in God, went about achieving them. This was an enjoyable biography, an unusually humble one from someone in the medical profession who has earned every right to brag about his achievements, yet who deliberately avoids doing so. You will enjoy reading this book.

Great info, organized poorly, don't get audio version
By flotsette
It's hard to rate this book, as the information is excellent, but I really wish he'd organized the book totally differently.

What's great about the book is him identifying the 6 types of addicts and his 4-pronged approach to treatment. I also found his info on supplements to be excellent (although I wish there was more about them). This book is much better in print than in audio; I don't recommend the audiobook version. It was extremely tedious to listen to, plus you will want to be able to refer to the book without listening to it all again.

What would have made sense is to have a quiz to see what type of addict you might be, then a chapter on each type so a reader could just focus on the suggestions for THEM specifically (without having to also read through everyone else's suggestions....) This would have been organizing the book in a way that made sense for the reader.

Instead, apparently, he organized it in a way that made sense to him as a diagnostician. As readers and not doctors, we really don't need that comparative information. There is a quiz in an appendix of the print version (that's not included in the audio version, and also no longer at the author's website!) and then he goes on and on, rattling off the suggestions for all 6 types in a row. Then he repeats himself endlessly by telling you how to implement these same suggestions in different contexts: there's a chapter on kids, then a chapter on family, then a chapter on work... all repeating the same suggestions. This felt like filler to me.

The net effect is that throughout the book, he gives you HUNDREDS of "to-dos" -- but really there are only a handful. However, he made his program seem much more daunting than it is by the way he organized the info.

LOVED THIS BOOK!!
By skbraswell
I have been doing a self study on the brain for about 3 years now and have read several of Dr. Amen's books. Unchain Your Brain helps you to understand what happens inside your brain biologically when addiction of any kind takes over...makes complete sense to me that something is going on at the brain level for addictions that seem impossible to overcome. I also love that he makes many recommendations on natural supplements, nutrition, and other lifestyle modifications that can help you to take control of addiction. I highly recommend this book if you or a loved one is wrestling with addiction.

A Must Read for Addictions Recovery
By Dr. Beverly Smallwood
As a psychologist in private practice who works with both addicted clients and their families, I believe this book provides essential understanding of addictions and other psychological disorders that goes well beyond that of typical treatment. Taking the broad view of addictions to substances as well as to activities, Dr. Amen presents in simple terms the powerful impact of various brain functions, then goes on to prescribe doable actions to increase the health of specific areas of the brain. This book not only gives me better tools to help my clients, it inspires me to keep my own brain healthier! Beverly Smallwood, Ph.D.

Tomoe convinces Azo to join forces with her, and together they set out across Naipon in search of a golden sword, which they will use to carve a place for themselves in a man's world.

One Samurai's Road
By Marc Ruby™
This is the second volume in Jessica Salmonson's fantasy series set around the life of Tomoe Gozen, a semi-legendary woman Samurai in 12th Century Japan. Gozen is believed to have become the wife of Minamoto no Yoshinaka who launched an unsuccessful struggle to gain lordship over Japan and the Minamoto clan that culminated in a massive battle near Kyoto in 1184.

This part of the story starts with Tomoe's refusal to accept a husband. In Feudal Japan a woman was permitted to be a samurai until she was married. At that time she must put aside her weapons and become an obedient homemaker - hardly the kind of role for which the young woman was suited. Instead she storms off and becomes enmeshed in fighting the efforts of one sword smith to destroy the life and works of Okio, the most brilliant sword smith of the age.

In a mid-book climax where Tomoe and her companions battle the 55 samurai who took the life of Okio she discovers the one of her new friends is actually Kiso Yoshinaka, to whom she was promised as bride, and who invites her to join him as a full equal instead of a subservient child bearer. Tomoe accepts, and joins in Lord Kiso's conquests as he gradually builds the strength he will need to challenge his cousin.

In the process of this struggle Tomoe is granted the use of the Golden Naginata, a weapon that will blind anyone who see is unless it has been coated with the blood of the magical kirin that is its guardian. While the weapon often grants victory it seems to collect a toll on its wielder, not in strength, but in anger and self-doubt. Thus this isn't just an adventure story but a tale of Tomoe's efforts to find herself in a culture that always seems to limit her choices.

Aside from an overly long battle scene that seems to be more concerned with its emulation of Japanese convention than stimulating interest, this is a better book than it's predecessor. It is more of a novel, and Tomoe Gozen reveals a great deal of character as she follows her own difficult path. She is atypical, even for a female samurai and never falls into the role of romantic heroine.

The Golden Naginata
By Mary A. Dorman
This is a delightful and thoughtful story set in the mythic world of Naipon where the myths and dreams of the Japanese are real. The story is about the woman warrior Tomoe Gozen and how she came to wield the wonderful sword called the Golden Naginata. This book is the second in the series - a compelling story - I enjoyed being immersed in another time and another way of life.

A Student of Modern Day Naginata - Australia
By K I Salter-Nichols
A rare and beautiful adventure of a warrior in a world of Japanese goblins, samurai's and a truly glorious weapon that Jescia Salmonson has written in The Golden Naginata.
I treasure this Japanese fantasy, it's the most colourful fantasy adventure I've entered. It's one of those books that will remain on my shelf for years to come.

The Jew of New York, by Ben Katchor

In 1825, Mordecai Noah, a New York politician and amateur playwright possessed of a utopian vision, summoned all the lost tribes of Israel to an island near Buffalo in the hope of establishing a Jewish state. His failed plan, a mere footnote in Jewish-American history, is the starting point for Ben Katchor's brilliantly imagined epic that unfolds on the streets of New York a few years later.

A disgraced kosher slaughterer, an importer of religious articles and women's hosiery, a pilgrim peddling soil from the Holy Land, a latter-day Kabbalist, a man with plans to carbonate Lake Erie--these are just some of the characters who move through Katchor's universe, their lives interwoven in a common struggle to settle into the New World even as it erupts into a financial frenzy that could as easily leave them bankrupt as carry them into the future.

Amazon.com Review
Whether chronicling the metropolitan peregrinations of Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer, or weaving together history and fantasy in 19th- century New York, Ben Katchor's comics, filled with scratchy figures moving through gray-washed streets, feel like the relics of a half- forgotten dream. The Jew of New York takes an obscure historical footnote--an attempt in 1825 to establish a Jewish homeland in upstate New York--and spins it into an intricate tale of a rapidly developing city and its diverse inhabitants, from one-legged actresses, to wandering Jews, to masked anti-Semites. The plot wanders from place to place, never predictable, but always fascinating. The result is a like a story by Paul Auster, rewritten by Charles Dickens, as Katchor gradually draws the reader into his bizarre but precisely imagined world. Weird conspiracies, religious fanaticism, and a plan to carbonate Lake Erie are just three of the threads which Katchor weaves together, creating a version of 1830's New York that captures the spirit of the times in a way that history cannot. The reader is never quite sure what is true, yet this powerfully imagined work is irresistibly compelling. Katchor's disturbing, deeply layered historical palimpsest transforms his collection of misfit characters and the city that they inhabit into something rich and strange.

From Publishers Weekly
Much as he does in his acclaimed comic strip Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer, Katchor uses the intricacies of urban social life to create a dense, whimsically inventive portrait-in-comics of New York City, this time at the dawn of the capitalist age. The work opens in 1830 as the New World Theater prepares its production of an anti-Semitic comedy titled The Jew of New York, a "burlesque" of the life of the putative founder of the first Jewish state (very likely, a shady land deal) on an uninhabited island in upstate New York. Katchor's ingeniously meandering tale uses multiple, overlapping story lines to illustrate aspects of urban and frontier life. Characters overlap, pass each other and return in a rich stew of hucksterism, scientific idealism and trashy popular culture that fancifully recreates the advent of a new mercantile age. Katchor's freewheeling imagination conjures a 19th-century utopian community of air worshippers called Free Oxygenators; a Native American named Elim-min-nopee, who orates in perfect Hebrew for 25 cents admission; and a businessman, Francis Oriole, who is obsessed with the medicinal properties of soda water and has a bizarre scheme to carbonate Lake Erie. History, fantasy and Jewish mysticism ferment in this comic social atmosphere, related with Katchor's wry humor, deadpan equilibrium and poetic verisimilitude. His b&w drawings are brisk and expressive but also quite precise, and they work in combination with the text to produce a singularly captivating fictional portrait of 19th-century Americana. From School Library Journal
YA-American social history, 19th-century economics, religion and racial beliefs, theater life, and science all get the Katchor treatment in this graphic novel with well-developed characters, plot and subplots, and literary devices. An 1830 stage production of an anti-Semitic comedy, "The Jew of New York," is interwoven with the stories of a onetime kosher butcher who has come to New York City from the wilds of Albany; an urban denizen earning his way in the New World by selling dirt from the Holy Land (for burial of the observant dead); a merchant in Asian buttons who conspires to steal beaver pelts; a has-been actress; and others who are either Jewish, gentile anti-Semites, or soulless folk who want to make a buck. In true Katchor style, the artwork is engaging and the characters are individualized by strange and wondrously unique habiliments (including a theater director who wears a face mask) as well as by their vocabularies, intentions (reported through actions as well as words), and interactions. Nothing puerile here, this is an adult novel because of the complexity of its literary presentation. Sophisticated teens-especially those with an interest in urban lore or drama-will enjoy it immensely.

Interesting look at Young America's Values (not unlike Y2K+)
By Amazon Customer
Well, first of all, I have to say I'm really surprised by the people who don't like this book. Certainly I don't expect it to be universally loved, but I really disagree with the reasons I've read below. For example, one reviewer criticized it by calling it a "book of ideas." Yes, exactly! And not your run-of-the-mill ideas either. I found it very inventive, original, thought-provoking, and culturally/historically accurate. That's a lot to pull off in less than 100 pages--pages that are largely taken up by drawings. Pictures do say 1,000 words. Second, I completely disagree with the reviewer who noted that you have to know something about Jewish stereotypes. I'm a black African female living in 21st century America, and I had no difficulty understanding the stereotypes or warped values behind them. Maybe it would be safer to say that you need to understand or have been exposed to some type of stereotype in your lifetime. But I have to think that most people who would even pick up this sort of book, would be literate enough to know that the stereotypes depicted, are exactly that. I even disagree that the page layouts were difficult to read. I think if you have ever read sequential art, it's pretty straight-forward. And if you haven't, the process of figuring it out--and it really does become intuitive very quickly--adds to the telling. You *do* find the significance of certain details by kind of puzzling over the images and layout. So I guess if you need hand-holding narratives, then this probably isn't the book for you. But this is the first work by Katchor that I've read, and I am very impressed by his ability to say so much in so few words about capitalism, nature conservancy, race relations, religiosity, sexuality, theatre, etc. and how these things comprise /conflict with "progress" and the belief every age has that it is the epitomy of advanced human development.

I first heard of Katchtor when reading The Narrative Corpse, a story told by 69 artists and edited by Art Spiegelman. Unsurprisingly, a lot of people who had a negative reaction to it, had similar comments as can be found here. That the "story," as such, wasn't linear, etc. But again, I feel like those readers really missed the point. Anyway, I'll save that review for that book, but if you're not so hung up on context, The Narrative Corpse is another that you might enjoy, though the two books couldn't be more dissimilar.

Everybody except me either loves or hates this book
By A Customer
I'm a big fan of Julius Knipl, so I looked forward very much to _The Jew of New York_. When I saw that all the Amazon.com reviews of it were either adoring or vituperative, I knew I had to buy it right away. Why had that happened?
Well, now I know. This is a book with prerequisites, and if you don't have 'em, you're going to find the book very difficult. You need to know something about Jewish life in America, particularly the panoply of stereotypes to which they've been subjected (one that gets a lot of play in the book, the idea that Jews somehow smell bad, is not quite so current as it once was). And it helps to know something about the 19th century American brand of crackpot people and crackpot groups.
Finally, you need to know how to read Ben Katchor. If you expect a linear read you'll be frustrated. Each panel needs to be scrutinized carefully, and pages will pass before you catch the significance of certain details. You'll need to learn to like that centered panel that one reviewer hated so much...it's used for reasons, sometimes esthetic, sometimes dramatic.
In the end, I was disappointed in _The Jew of New York_ because I'd hoped for a book first about people and feelings rather than about ideas. The author's aim (my informed guess here) is to show how the majority can simultaneously fetishize minorities and hold them in contempt, certainly a notion with relevance to 1999. But I wish he could have told me about that with more emotion; instead, we get a range of exceedingly eccentric characters, whose hearts we don't really get into.
Anyway, I don't regret my purchase, but if I weren't a Katchor fan, I might.

Waiter! A bowl of turtle soup...
By A Customer
This book is terrible. First the story. It weaves several different story lines together. A production of a play 'The Jew of New York' by a questionable director (guess what happens to him in the end), a plan to carbonate Lake Erie, and a guy reading 'Lost Tribe' pamphlets in a rubber suit. There's a button importer and an Indian who speaks Yiddish. Sounds inventive. Sounds squirrelly enough for a graphic novel. But the author, caught up in his own casting brillance, forgets to make the characters say and do inventive and brilliant things. Instead they plod. In the beginning you do find yourself wondering if the plots are historical, but by the end you're just screaming to have the book done with. The art? Every character looks like they were morphed out of one base character. It's impossible to tell them apart. Also you should have a good magnifying glass because the panels are too small. It would have been nice if the publisher would have included one. There is also this repetitive center panel that appears every six or seven pages. It distracts and is annoying. The author should have known this. I think the actor Maynard Daizy (a character in the novel) sums it up the best as he discusses the up and coming play with the scenic director Samson Gergel..."The dialogue itself is devoid of humor. Waiter! A bowl of turtle soup..." I couldn't have said it better myself.

Very beneficial. This is a required course for food service managers in Alabama. It is easy to read and understand with sample questions and answers in each chapter. This is a course recognized in all fifty states so If I move, I will already have the course. My employer supplied me with a book but I bought this because I wanted my own copy to mark and highlight.

"A Genealogy of Modern Architecture" is a reference work on modern architecture by Kenneth Frampton, one of today's leading architectural theorists. Conceived as a genealogy of twentieth century architecture from 1924 to 2000, it compiles some sixteen comparative analyses of canonical modern buildings ranging from exhibition pavilions and private houses to office buildings and various kinds of public institutions. The buildings are compared in terms of their hierarchical spatial order, circulation structure and referential details. The analyses are organized so as to show what is similar and different between two paired types, thus revealing how modern tradition has been diversely inflected. Richly illustrated, "A Genealogy of Modern Architecture" is a new standard work in architectural education.

Great Book For Children to Learn About Lincoln
By Amazon Customer
The author has most details similar to other writers. Writing a book using interviews with people who knew Abraham Lincoln and their account of events is difficult at best. Many times those stories will change in the telling and become embellished a little more with each telling.
Mr. Whipple decided to keep the focus on Lincoln and his reactions during the war years and not the details of the battles. It doesn't give much detail about Mary Todd Lincoln. Which, makes this a great literary work for young people to get to know our 16th President.
The story of Lincoln's life will make you laugh and make you cry while telling how a young boy from the Midwest wilderness in spite of the many set backs of life, grows into the very person needed at the worse time our country ever went through.

By James R. Black
The title of this book is misleading, because only a very small portion was dedicated to his youth. The story just kind of rambles around and the same incident is retold in a different manner.

I read it in one sitting. Touching, funny, thought-provoking, with a huge heart. We are the tin -- JEANETTE WINTERSON Matt Haig is a marvellous writer: limpid; tender; passionate. In this memoir (and it's short, barely 200 pages long), he manages to articulate, both the bleakness of depression and the means of dealing with it, little by little, day by day, without ever sounding maudlin, or self-indulgent, or preachy. For everyone who has ever felt the snap of the black dog's teeth, this book is wise, funny, affirming and redemptive. Sometimes depression can be like falling into a wordless pit. From the viewpoint of a 'depressive'
By Straightforward
I enjoyed reading Matt's book on his experience of going through depression; it's part autobiography, part self-help manual - there is very much a sense of the author putting things back in place, mapping out the topography of his own mind and discovering a place where he can comfortably be himself. By putting it all down on paper, he is exorcising the demons in the darkness by exposing them to the light of public examination.

As someone who has also been through the experience of depression for many years and has also arrived at incredibly similar conclusions after coming out the other side, I recognise completely the numb, bleak, monochromatic existence that he describes; the endless days ahead, the wasted days behind. The inability to realise that you have an impact on others, that you even matter. That anything matters.

But it was this that made the 'depression years' in the book seem almost as turgid and endless as going through the experience again for real; by the 80th page, I really was feeling bleak; I started to recognise that familiar 'me me me' narrative that so bored me about myself when I was depressed and talking about it with friends, and reading the book itself almost became like a microcosm of battling with depression itself: were things really going to get better? Would I really start enjoying this book before it was too late? What was wrong with me for not feeling the same joyous giddiness that all the celebs on the covers evidenced in their soundbite quotes? Was I hateful for writing a less-than-glowing review of Matt's very personal and revealing book, risking hurting his feelings for my own subjective self-satisfaction?

Even though this opening part of the book was bleak and uncomfortable to read, I accepted it for what it was and struggled through, adopting the maxim that sometimes, just keeping going is a victory for positivity. There were times when I came close to ending it all and closing the book for good, but - without checking the exact page count - I think the sun finally started to come out after 100 pages. That was too much for me as a depressive to get much out of - it was a hard read; it seemed to be there to function as a 'window into the nightmare' for those who haven't experienced it. They might find it useful, but although cases of depression seem to have similar themes and motifs, they vary in context as much as the sufferers themselves are unique individuals.

After that, when the book deals with where his head's at now, it gets easier. But these are things I wanted more detail on - there are lots of lists, and very very short chapters all through this book, which make it easier to pick up and get into - but they also make the reading experience frustratingly insubstantial at times. Maybe there's something to this book leading the advance against the taboo of depression and suicide - if that's the case, then I hope it performs the function of getting it out into the public arena once and for all.

There were times, when reading, that I felt that pang of wonder and dread that comes when you know exactly what the next sentence is going to be - and there are times when that same sensation of knowing felt like something jaded and predictable; similarly, there were times when I felt the tone of the narrative to be a gentle one, speaking great truths, but it also felt at later times like I was a bed-bound patient being ministered by someone with the bedside manner of Alan Titchmarsh; oozing soothingness and calm to a poor ill person.

Life has brought me to the same conclusions as Matt, though; that's a sign we're both going the right way.

A very thought-provoking read that isn't the magical work of profundity that the publishers seem to want to market it as - that's far too much expectation to have for what is essentially a very humble enterprise; that of an author working through what happened to him in the most natural way possible for him - via his pen. It is a work of kindness, and of good intention; it is a work of reason, and a testament to the powers of the mind; but I feel that it's being hyped into something that the author never intended it to be.

This book is useful for those who wish to get an idea of what it feels like to go through depression. It would also be useful to someone in the middle of a depressive episode, I suppose. Personally I was both pleased and disappointed by this book - pleased that we had arrived at almost exactly the same perspective on life, but disappointed that I could therefore only confirm my existing beliefs rather than challenge them and learn something new.

Finally, my views on happiness, how to find it, and how to keep it (as Matt finishes in the same way himself):

1) All that exists is the moment of 'now'. Everything else - the past and the future - is in your head. Leave the past behind you; it has gone. By being positive in the present moment, you are sowing seeds of good possibilities for the future; there is no need to dwell modbidly on what is yet to happen.

2) Being kind to others, and having your actions affect others in a positive way will make all parties a lot happier.

3) Diversity of choice produces stress, not happiness. Keep it simple.

4) Don't let your mind tell you downers. When you catch yourself having miserable thoughts, take positive action be reinforcing the upbeat, truthful alternative - even if you don't feel like you are.

5) Your mind can be trained like a dog. A repeated action becomes a habit after three weeks or so. Acquire positive habits, drop the negative ones.

6) Don't judge. It's not as simple as 'succeed' or 'fail'. Just accept and be open to what is.

7) Exercise makes the body happy

8) EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT.

9) Your good mood deserves protection - it is fragile and valuable. Your good mood is stronger than the bad mood of others.

10) You can always do better tomorrow.

11) People feel happier if they have a purpose.

12) Everyone's life is different. Everyone comes to terms with their life in their own way.

Ultimately I'm a bit disappointed by this book, but I totally recognise the story; I liked it without getting as excited as everyone else seems to be doing.

Real.
By Liz Barnsley
A copy of this book was given to me by a good friend.

It is ironic (is that the right word I wonder?) that the author who gave me my first reason to stay alive, at a time when I struggled to find one – with his previous novel, The Humans – then went on to write openly, elegantly and with no holds barred, about his own experiences of depression and anxiety. And called it “Reasons to Stay Alive” If I was better with words myself I could probably find a better one than Ironic. But it will have to do.

I would normally at this point I guess, wax lyrical about how beautifully Mr Haig writes and how he gets me every time. Which is true of course, but not what this book needs. I’ve read a lot of non fiction about Depression and related issues during the time that I have been trying to understand my own mindset, my own experience, but what Matt has done is simply talk about it honestly. In the end, if you want to try and understand it, this is what you need – open, frank and truthful words that paint a picture and allow you in.

I shall be keeping a copy of it close by for sure, for the next 3am where I think perhaps dying would be better.

I’ve given it 5 stars obviously, but this is not a book to be rated. It is one to be read – by anyone who suffers, has suffered, lives with someone who suffers and ALL the people in between – one of the most important books you may ever read about the human condition.

Brave, sincere, genuine and inspirational. That is all.

Courageous and valuable book offering real insight into the nature of depression, its many challenges and its unexpected gifts
By A. I. McCulloch
This is such a valuable book.
In having the courage to tell his own story of recovery from the deepest depths of despair Matt Haig offers powerful insights into the nature of depression and anxiety. Since 2005 Matt has been an increasingly successful author; his first book was written whilst he was still in the very firm grip of the illness. His books are award winning (Shadow Forest) and are set to be filmed (The Radleys)
Matt's decision to tell his story came out of the reaction to his novel The Humans which tells of mental illness and the isolation of those who suffer.

Depression dropped on Matt out of nowhere, and he quickly found everyday interactions impossible. After three days in bed wondering what was happening to him, he stepped outside and came within inches of taking his own life at the edge of a cliff in Ibiza. The fact that he didn't and has written an account of his state of mind at the time is perhaps an insight into those who take their own lives suddenly leaving loved ones mystified. Matt could have made that decision within hours of depression dropping upon him and nobody would have known why, if he did not tell of it.

Matt's long slow fight back is carefully chronicled in short insightful chapters. The unstinting love and support he received from his girlfriend Andrea, the repeated panic attacks that set him back, the anxiety he felt. His depression was a whole mix of emotions, but time passed and gradually he improved. The panic attacks became controllable; his life began to open out again. Books and writing were instrumental in his recovery.

The book is also a plea for more understanding of depression. Matt writes that 'Depression is a thin skin'; the late Spike Milligan wrote how those with depression were ' a skin short'. This thin skin is what has made Matt the person he is and more appreciative of life's wonders; his creative gifts have a deeper well of resources to draw on. Control of his illness has enabled Matt to use the gifts that the thin skin has brought him. He is able to feel more alive, more in touch with life.

It's not an easy read, but it is an exceptionally worthwhile read for anyone who wants to gain insight into the nature of depression. What it doesn't offer are quick solutions, for there are none but it offers hope and it offers understanding .
