About the Author
Bob Feldman still remembers those moments of being overwhelmed when he started college at Wesleyan University. “I wondered whether I was up to the challenges that faced me,” he recalls, “and―although I never would have admitted it at the time―I really had no idea what it took to be successful at college.”

That experience, along with his encounters with many students during his own teaching career, led to a life-long interest in helping students navigate the critical transition that they face at the start of their own college careers. Professor Feldman, who went on to receive a doctorate in psychology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, is now Deputy Chancellor and Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is founding director of POWER Up for Student Success, the first-year experience course for incoming students.

Professor Feldman’s proudest professional accomplishment is winning the College Outstanding Teaching Award at UMass. He also has been named a Hewlett Teaching Fellow and was Senior Online Instruction Fellow. He has taught courses at Mount Holyoke College, Wesleyan University, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Professor Feldman is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is a winner of a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar and Lecturer award and has written over 200 scientific articles, book chapters, and books. His books, some of which have been translated into Spanish, French, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese, and Chinese, include Improving the First Year of College: Research and Practice; Understanding Psychology, 12/e; and Development Across the Life Span, 7/e. His research interests encompass the study of honesty and truthfulness in everyday life, development of nonverbal behavior in children, and the social psychology of education. His research has been supported by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute on Disabilities and Rehabilitation Research.

With the last of his three children completing college, Professor Feldman occupies his spare time with pretty decent cooking and earnest, but admittedly unpolished, piano playing. He also loves to travel. He lives with his wife, who is an educational psychologist, in a home overlooking the Holyoke mountain range in western Massachusetts.

I have used this book to build lessons. Not from the text but from the information it gives you. It explains grammar you have never really thought about, and makes it easy to understand. If you use this book for drills it is great for a warm-up or filling the last few minutes with a good speaking drill.

I liked this book so much I have two of them..

William Terry Couch (1901-1988) began his four-decade publishing career building the University of North Carolina Press into one of the nation's leading university presses. His editorial attacks on the social ills of the South earned him a reputation as a southern liberal. By the 1940s, his disaffection with New Deal politics turned him toward the right, resulting in his 1950 firing as director of the University of Chicago Press.

As a conservative, Couch sought books and articles that would sway general readers from what he saw as an intellectual torpor that accepted the growing role of government in American life. The liberals who controlled the presses found him dogmatic and irascible. When he tried to turn Collier's Encyclopedia into a journal of conservative opinion, he was fired as editor in chief in 1959. He ended his career as publisher for the libertarian William Volker Fund, which collapsed in the 1960s under charges of Nazism.

Couch was committed to publishing as a social cause and strove to disturb American complacency. This is the first book-length biography of Couch--a publisher who brought academic scholarship to the reading public to effect social, political and economic change.

A Fascinating Biography of a Book Publisher

William Terrence Couch is well known to students of Southern culture but almost unknown to others. Similarly, while one assumes he would be well known by historians of American conservatism for his work at the University of Chicago Press and afterwards, he is not even mentioned in the nine hundred page American Conservatism: An Encyclopedia, the extensive American Conservatism: The First Complete Guide, or The Concise Conservative Encyclopedia, whose title is misleading in its modesty. Hopefully, Shiflett’s book will make him better known to all those interested in American cultural history, particularly the book world.

Couch wanted university presses to issue books for the “general reader,” not merely a small group of scholars. Hard-headed and contentious, he battled with almost everyone throughout his long career. Moreover, at the University of North Carolina, he created enemies because of his liberalism; later, as he moved politically to the Right, he was pilloried for this at the University of Chicago Press and afterwards. He locked horns with some of the most prominent scholars and thinkers of his time, like H.W. Odum and Robert Hutchins.

Those who have worked in publishing or academia will smile knowingly at some of the institutional politics which engaged him. Those who have been politically committed will be fascinated by his intellectual battles in that area.

Shiflett’s scholarship is impeccable. Based on an enormous amount of work with published material, archival manuscripts, and personal interviews, this book is extremely well written. He is fastidiously objective on controversial subjects which would have most lesser authors displaying their own views.

This is not the sole book written by Shiflett. Some years ago he wrote a highly readable work on the history of college and university libraries in the United States. It remains the best study of this important subject and I recommend it highly.

With the growth of “progressive” political invective and post-modernist babble among university-based historians, it is a pleasure to read solid works like his.

The singularity presents both an existential threat to humanity and an existential opportunity for humanity to transcend its limitations. Shanahan makes it clear that we need to imagine both possibilities if we want to bring about the better outcome.

An exellent, brief introduction to the issues of the singularity and AI more generally

This is an excellent, brief book. Unlike many books in this field, it gets right to the point as well as filling the newbie in on vital aspects of applicable technologies. The book is somewhat philosophical but looks at the whole space of AI up to and including the singularity. It does not take a strong stance on what is possible technologically but explores what the implications are if it turns out to be the case that AI is possible.

You Are Not Alone.

When my father developed dementia some years ago, I didn't know what to do at first. This book proved to be a big help for my family and me, and now I'd like to be of some small help to you.

Dementia doesn't strike out of the blue. It builds up over a period of years, and in the beginning there is an understandable tendency to consider a loved one's unusual behavior to be just another sign of aging. However, when Alzheimer's or other dementias are at play, sooner or later you may well find yourself in need of some help when trying to deal with your loved one's needs. Indeed, until you understand more about Alzheimer's you may not fully appreciate the struggles your loved one is dealing with. It is a very scary thing to gradually lose some of your important mental capabilities, and there is a resulting tendency among those with dementia to either act out or to withdraw from normal family communications.

Here's your chance. If you even suspect Alzheimer's or another dementia (they are not necessarily the same), I strongly recommend that you get this book and read it. It will help you to better:

1. understand what your loved one is going through.
2. deal with the behavioral issues associated with Alzheimer's.
3. find medical help.
4. find additional Alzheimer's and dementia information from a number of helpful organizations.
5. discover support groups.

An owner's manual for Alzheimer's patients and those who love them

I wish I had bought this book as soon as my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. My father has received very little information from my mother's doctors on what to expect as her disease progresses and more importantly, how to deal with these issues. When I received the book, I looked up her latest problem in the index, dizziness, and turned right to an informative section that helped clarify what's going on with my mom. The bathing sections are helpful for understanding and thus coping with those issues. I appreciate the depth of topics and detail for symptoms that Alzheimer's patients can have; I am also grateful for the huge emphasis on respite care for the caregiver. This gives my siblings and me another avenue of discussion in getting help for my dad, who like many spouses has his own health issues.

My only problem with the current hardback edition is the text size - it's a small font and closely spaced. I would hope that future revisions would enlarge the print a bit, especially since this book is generally going to be read by adults who appreciate a little larger print.

Overall I highly recommend it - I've been flipping between this book and the Mayo Clinic book on Alzheimer's, and while they both have excellent information, I feel that this book is the better one for detailed information on the myriad little things that crop up with care of a loved one with Alzheimer's disease.

Excellent and Helpful Book

As a caregiver of an elderly Alzheimers patient, this book was a life saver. I had so many questions that doctors and neurologists just didn't explain. If you suspect that you will be a caregiver, this book is an essential for your library.
