Great calisthenics guidance and a free workout program :)

I was a bit intimidated by calisthenics at first having seen some of the crazy stuff people do online but this book made over 50 exercises feel accessible to me as a complete beginner. Now that is not to say that they are all easy - lord no - but the way each one is explained in steps 1...2...3 etc. makes it impossible to get your technique wrong which is extremely important.

It starts off with the most basic stuff such as different forms of push-ups (which by the way I realised I was doing slightly wrong before reading about the proper technique) and then progresses to more complex stuff such as muscle-ups, dips, levers etc. This makes for a natural progression which is realistic and achievable for a beginner while still being challenging and effective.

I know this is a book for beginners but I honestly think there are enough exercises and variations to keep you going right into the intermediate stages here. I mean, how often do you go to the gym and do 50 different things in a day, or even a week or month!?

As well as all the exercises you also get lots of top tips and nuggets of wisdom from experienced practitioners. I recommend downloading the book to your smartphone / tablet too so you can have it handy in the gym or wherever you choose to work out.

Excellent introduction to basic and intermediate level calisthenics. The book begins with an explanation of what calisthenics is / does and some fundamental advice on diet, preparation and warm-up which I would advise everyone to read.

Next up you drive straight into some exercises. What I love about this book is that they are laid out in a logical order so you can work through them and make progress as you become more comfortable with each. There is no stupidly advanced stuff which a beginner would find impossible to achieve and everything is broken down into body parts so you can really target whichever area you like.

There’s also a bonus in the back of the book, a free calisthenics for beginners training program. I printed it out and take it to the gym with me every time I go. My body hurts like hell but that just means I am doing it right! Having this book on my phone also enables me to ensure I am using the proper form during my workouts, kind of like having a personal trainer but at a fraction of the cost ;)

Would I recommend it? Absolutely. 50 exercises and tons of other useful advice all for less than the cost of a cup of coffee. Bargain.

Terry Des Jardins, M.Ed, RRT is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Respiratory Care at Parkland College in Champaign, IL where he taught for 35 years. An excellent book that is well written and organized.

I’m not too far into the book yet but thus far I think it is an excellent book. It is well written and not overly complicated or wordy like many medical based books are. I do think that the online companion is not as good as it could be but that is probably because they have an additional product you can buy that is very comprehensive but expensive.

A good source for discussion

Michael Howard's cogent attempt to construct a theoretical substructure for "market socialism" provides a good basis for discussion around issues of post-capitalism and what kind of "socialism" remains viable for the twenty-first century. The book is especially valuable for its treatment of the Soviet-type socialist model and the reasons for its failure and also its well-researched presentation of various existing experiments in self-management, worker-ownership etc, with both their successes and shortcomings.
Howard's presentation of market socialism as an attractive and realistic improvement on capitalism is relatively persuasive, however his attempts to defend his model against other self-managed alternatives, notably Michael Albert's "Parecon" are less convincing. Howard merely states his belief that market socialism is a more practical and reasonable alternative to capitalism than the "parecon" but fails to adequately address the arguments directed at market systems by thinkers such as Michael Albert and Robin Hahnel.
One great advantage of Howard's book is its readibility and clarity. It is certainly a valuable contribution to socialist theory and there is much to admire in it. In contrast however, my personal opinion remains that the best proposal for a self-managing economy currently under discussion remains the Parecon model. As a companion to this work, I heartily recommend Michael Albert's "Parecon" for readers interested in exploring the potential pitfalls and weaknesses of the ideas contained in Howard's book.

Amazon sent me an email asking if I'd like to submit a review for this product. But this presents a problem, since Amazon never shipped it. I would actually love read Michael Howard's book and provide a review. I'd much prefer this to getting my money back because I was really interested in reading this book. But I can't seem to get either the book or a refund out of Amazon. So this "review" is about Amazon, not Michael Howard's book. Sorry if this seems inappropriate. But Amazon clearly failed to do their job, they've ignored my formal complaint, I've received no compensation or feedback, and I won't be doing any more business with Amazon. The Animal Kingdom comprises the longest segment as it is broken down into invertebrates and vertebrates, with the latter divided still further into fish, birds, and so on. Two closing units discuss habitat loss and its effect on biodiversity, and how one can protect the environment. A final entry aimed at "Parents, Teachers and Guardians" explains the history of scientific classification, discusses the importance of biodiversity to this planet, and provides some suggestions for fostering a biodiversity ethic in young people. Each spread covers one branch of the animal kingdom. To make the enormity of species understandable, Strauss equates individual species (e.g., 10,000 bacteria) with one leaf on the tree. Since only a couple of paragraphs are devoted to each species (a bit more information appears in captions), this is strictly an overview. But the eye-catching, painterly artwork, with various life-forms painted into the tree, invites children to look more closely than they might have otherwise. Concluding spreads consider the disappearance of some species and how readers can become stewards of the earth. You Can Remember That, Can't You?

The two most fundamental areas of study in modern biology are evolution and taxonomy. I will save a discussion of evolution for another day. But here we have Rochell Strauss's _Tree of Life: The Incredible Biodiversity of Life on Earth_ (2004), which deals with taxonomy-- the classification of living things. Now Strauss knows that _eventually_ taxonomy becomes legalistically complicated. But she also knows that _initially_ it is quite simple. Any kid can learn the basics. Hell, so can a lot of adults.

You've got this tree of life, see, and it's got five main branches or kingdoms: Monera (bacteria), Fungi (mushrooms, yeasts, lichens), Protocista (paramecia, ameobas, algae), Plants, and Animals. Plants are divided up between nonflowering and flowering. Animals are divided up between invertibrates and vertibrates. You can remember that, can't you?

And you can remember that we are vertibrates, can't you? Because we have backbones. And that there are only five kinds of vertibrates: fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. And that we are mammals, primates, and humans. That wasn't so hard, was it?

Strauss makes it especially easy by giving lots of colorful examples along the way. And there are also those lovely, giant paintings by Margot Thompson giving illustrations of living things that fall into all sorts of different categories. There are good sections on changes to the tree of life, some species at risk, becoming guardians of the tree of life, and notes to parents, teachers, and guardians.

Great for kids interested in natural life

A child’s introduction to biodiversity, this book creatively illustrates the richness and organization of life on earth. Kids learn about the five kingdoms and how all living things are classified in one of those. For those kids who are interested in natural life and are ready to learn more about the organization of it all, I’d definitely recommend this.

My six year old son loves all of the "puzzle master" books. I highly recommend them, they are great for road trips and just quiet time in the afternoon.
