NOT WORTH THE PAPER ITS PRINTED ON
By Amazon Customer
This is a terrible buy, not even worth the paper it is printed on. Everything is pixelated and blurry and the final product isn't even shown in the end. It doesn't teach you how to draw eyes or faces, only four different characters that look terrible! Might I also point out it was PRINTED THREE DAYS BEFORE IT ARRIVED?? This "big" book is a lie and does not fit the description at all. Don't waste your money!

Ishi in Two Worlds A Biography of the Last Wild Indian in North America, by Theodora Kroeber

The life story of Ishi, the Yahi Indian, lone survivor of a doomed tribe, is unique in the annals of North American anthropology. It is also a tragic and absorbing drama that forms part of our own heritage of the land. Ishi stumbled into the twentieth century on the morning of August 29, 1911, when, desperate with hunger and in terror of the white murderers of his family, he was found in the corral of a slaughter house near Oroville, California. He had wandered in exhaustion from his native hills down to this valley town in search of food. Promptly labeled a wild man by the townspeople, and carried off for safe-keeping to the local jail, he was finally identified as an Indian by an anthropologist from the University. Ishi was brought to San Francisco by Professor T. T. Waterman and lived there the rest of his life under the care and protection of the staff of the University of California's Museum of Anthropology. He was about fifty years of age when discovered, and ultimately was given the name Ishi - his own Yahi word for man - by professor Alfred Louis Kroeber. The first part of the book is a reconstructed life of Ishi in the world he was born into, that same world in which his people lived for centuries before the white man came to dispossess the Indian. The years of Ishi's childhood and most of his manhood were the fear-ridden times of the Yahi's hopeless struggle for existence. Ishi's second world endured for a mere five years, but it was a happier world for him than his first. He lived content with his good friends in the Museum and in continual wonderment at the white man's ways. We are given a full account of those years: Ishi's daily activities, his pastimes and pleasures. The story this book tells is an unusual and engrossing one and the manner of its telling will surely put it in the forefront of our literature about the American Indian. Ishi was, to one of his white friends, the most remarkable personality of his century. All this and more Mrs. Kroeber has vividly imparted to the reader.

The last free Native American in California
By Peggy Vincent
This book is one of two I routinely give to people who move to northern California. The other one is The Ohlone Way, by Malcolm Margolin. Ishi was the lone survivor of a doomed tribe of Yahi Indians on the slopes of Mt. Lassen. Other members of his tribe were murdered by a planned campaign of genocide during the settling of the West. When Ishi stumbled out of the hills of his birth in 1911, he landed in the 20th Century, huddled in the corner of a cattle corral on a ranch, dressed in rags, starving, desperately lonely, and probably certain he would be killed. Instead, a wise sheriff in Oroville called on some anthropologists from Univ of CA in Berkeley, and Ishi eventually came under the benevolent but somewhat demeaning (he was made the centerpiece of a museum exhibit) protection of Alfred Kroeber. It is Kroeber's wife who wrote this touching, heartwarming, illuminating and ultimately tragic history of Ishi's life in the 'modern' world.
Most moving for me was a long middle section that recounted a magical summer when Ishi took Kroeber and his teenage son back to Mt. Lassen and showed them his native territory. They lived together as unspoiled and free Native Americans for the summer, hunting deer, swimming in cold streams, living in huts and caves, building fires, making bows and arrows... An experience that was destined never to be repeated.
Wonderful archival photographs supplement the imminently readable text.
Don't miss this very special and quintessentially Californian piece of history. But there's no rush: this book is destined to remain in print forever.

Best book I've read this year
By David Graham
Imagine this: it's the 20th century, we have electricity, movies, telephones, trains, cars, the latest audio recording devices, indoor plumbing, and access to the usual luxuries and amenities of our western world. Then one day - here in the United States, out of our own country - a man appears out of the wilderness, almost magically transferred from the stone age to the steel age. Truth is said to be stranger than fiction, and the story of Ishi is one such example. Ishi was the last of the Yahi Indians, living in Northern California under a cloak of fear, secrecy, and evasion from white men, carrying on this lifestyle for the better part of four decades. In this thoroughly researched book, Theodora Kroeber tells Ishi's story. She covers the historical and geographical background of the Yahi Indians, how their lives began to change and their numbers decimated with the coming of the caucasions in the mid- 19th century, and how Ishi and the few remaining people of his tribe lived until Ishi was the last one left. She then tells us about the man himself, the last (happy) five years of his life in San Francisco, and the adjustments and learning Ishi went through in his new home. The author does a superb job of comparing and contrasting Ishi's stone age world with the steel age world, without the tedious prose often involved in such writing. This book is highly readable and strongly recommended.

Twentieth Century Time Traveler
By Plume45
This poignant portrayal of the most dramatic culture clash in American history reads like a literary bio-drama. Theodora Kroeber's exhaustive research and respectful treatment of aboriginal heritage provide accurate details of a successful Indian culture, which so-called Civilization had effaced from the earth by 1911. Starting with the geology and anthropology of the Yana and Yahi tribes (north of San Francisco Bay), she recreates their vanished lifstyle.
Part One describes the relatively peaceful existence of local native American tribes who learned to coexist both with Nature and each other. But the advent of the white man destroyed the fragile ecological and social balance which had existed for centuries, as Yankees and Hispanics gradually encroached on Indian territory--scorning their customs as "savage." Ishi's tribe was hated and ultimately hunted into extinction. Himself the last survivor, he staggered into a frontier town, gaunt, ragged and in mourning-- expecting instant death. Having lost touch with the last human beings who understood his pre-Columbian world, he had nothing to live for.
Part Two compassionately depicts his amazing metamorphosis from the last wild man to Mr. Ishi. He never revealed his true Indian name to any white man, but accepted the generic word, "Ishi" as his new name which simply means, Man. He emerges as a surprisingly gentle person, who adapted successfully to life in the modern world. Making friends with selected Americans, learning to live and almost thrive in the municipal jungle, he earned respect and admiration for his "primitive" skills. In fact Ishi left indelible memories upon those who were privileged to know him well and enjoy his company. His sentimental jouurney back into his past and former territory was well documented in photographs and (now disintegrated) film. What a privilege it must have been to observe this calm and dignified man demonstrate lost customs and survival skills.
From warrior to janitor/custodian this honorable man maintined his human dignity in all aspects of 20th century life, until his untimely death from TB five years later. In fact Ishi-made artifacts are treasured in Bay Area museums. One wonders if we of the modern world could adapt so well or philosophically to conditions so foreign as a trip through generations of Western achievement; how would we cope if we were transported forward in time by several centuries? Ishi adapted with grace and courtesy, inadvertantly causing us to wonder who the real "savages" are/were. But this book is not a racist guilt trip--rather it proves a personal odyssey which can teach and touch us all.

Abducted by the Star Prince: A Sci-Fi Alien Romance (Lords of Astria), by Juno Wells

As an astronaut, Nadia Rainer was trained to deal with the unexpected. She could fix airlocks in zero gravity, test spacesuits for oxygen leaks in near darkness, and detect broken equipment before it even broke down.

But when Nadia wakes up on Prince Kester's spaceship, she's a little confused. To say the least. A tall alien prince wasn't her kind of "unexpected."

The space station is far behind them. Nadia is sure she's hallucinating. The alien is distractingly sexy. And the ship is sailing straight past Jupiter and into a wormhole.

Great. She'll never make it back to the International Space Station in time for dinner.

And she might not want to.

This is a short standalone romance with an HEA.

What a fun, sexy read
By Allie McLean
What a fun, sexy read! I was pulled in immediately by Nadia's character, who was both smart and sassy. Not something I find enough of in romance that's for sure. And Prince Kester... oh man he was a dream! No wonder I can't find a man on earth, they're all up in space! The only thing that spoiled this book was that it had to end!! Hopefully Ms. Wells will write a sequel.

PS- the sex scenes are HOT HOT HOT! you've been warned ;)

Juno Wells is a new author for me.
By Dodie Stanton
She has created a new description of the alpha male (at least for me) and I like it. Here is a male who is sensitive and caring toward Nadia; not overbearing. It was a refreshing read & I look forward to reading her other books.

Great Book to Have Handy
By Amazon Customer
I needed this book for my equine internal medicine class and it was very helpful. It is well organized and had helpful illustrations. For the backyard horseman it may be difficult to understand and you must review the abbreviations in the back. I thoroughly enjoyed flipping through the book.

Book deal
By DIANNE
I like the fact the book was so reasonable. I was a little disappoint when I saw how much the name was covering the side of the book through. But my daughter whom I bought the book for was still pleased. I am now seeking the other two volumes that I thought were with the text I bought originally.

Very Well Written Book on Truss Design.
By Amazon Customer
This book is a more modern version of the Simplified Design series that was originally written by Harry Parker and updated by James Ambrose. Mr. Ambrose covers a lot of historical matter about trusses in this book, which is oddly helpful for me with work I do with older buildings. He covers all of the different types of trusses, and gets into detail about common timber and steel trusses.

His analysis and design sections are well written. A lot of structural engineering texts have very turgid language making it hard to decipher the simplest concepts, but Mr. Parker covers in plain every day language how to design a truss that makes the process very simple. The figures are easy to understand, and he gives easy to understand examples. What I found helpful is that he covers vertical trusses extensively and how to analyze them. Vertical trusses are very good for resisting wind loads, and this is the first text I've found to cover them specifically in such detail.

What makes this text more valuable is he covers in detail how to design the connections of trusses. With wood trusses there are a lot of factors to take into account, and he goes through it step by step. He also covers issues such as the loading of top chords of trusses from the vertical live and dead loads, which is often ignored in other texts. Finally, he gets into graphic analysis of trusses, which was done in the days before electronic calculators and then personal computers. I kind of skipped over that part.

I actually sat and read through the text in one evening, which is not something one normally can do with an engineering text. If you are designing trusses, this is a must have book for your library.

Buy this book. You'll find it very useful. It has comprehensive and clear explanations
By Fernando A. Medina
The books of the Ambrose serie generally are very good. This book is not the exception.
The Chapter 10 "Design of Steel Trusses" includes Joints in Steel Trusses (very well explained), an important aspect in the design, forgotten for the majority of the designers and structural engineers, but essential in the stability and perfomance of the a truss
In the chapter 16 reviews different forms of trusses searching the maximum efficiency.
This book is a "must have" publication .
You can purchase with security. It will be very useful in your daily work

Very nice primer on truss design and development
By R. Alembik
This book is not written by a Pulitzer prize winning author, but it is still very readable. It spoon feeds the technology well enough for an armchair understanding by any "victim" of liberal arts. I'm not sure if the technology is totally up to date because of its mid-90's publication date. But, unless you're actually an engineer or architect relying on the science that's discussed, then it's a very good product.

Malala, a Brave Girl from Pakistan/Iqbal, a Brave Boy from Pakistan: Two Stories of Bravery, by Jeanette Winter

Meet two heroes of Pakistan who stood up for the rights to freedom and education in these inspirational nonfiction tales from acclaimed author-illustrator Jeanette Winter. Two stories of bravery in one beautiful book—including the story of Malala Yousafzai, a winner of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize!

One country: Pakistan. Two children: Iqbal Masih and Malala Yousafzai. Each was unafraid to speak out. He, against inhumane child slavery in the carpet trade. She, for the right of girls to attend school. Both were shot by those who disagreed with them—he in 1995, she in 2012. Iqbal was killed instantly; Malala miraculously survived and continues to speak out around the world. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 for her work.

The stories of these two courageous children whose bravery transcended their youth, beautifully written and illustrated by celebrated author Jeanette Winter, are an inspiration to all.

From School Library Journal
Gr 2–4—Author and illustrator Winter, known for such works as The Librarian of Basra (Houghton Harcourt, 2005) and Nasreen's Secret School (S. & S., 2009), once again tackles the topic of humanitarian activism amid political violence in this two-in-one picture book. Malala Yousafzai, a young proponent of girls' education, came to the world's attention after being shot in the head by the Taliban in 2012. The corresponding story of Iqbal Masih, a young anti-child labor activist from 20 years earlier, is less well known—and has much less of a happy ending: the boy was shot and killed at age 12. Like Winter's earlier works, simple sentences and repetition ("Still Malala speaks out") give the story an accessible rhythm, and illustrations consisting of bold colors and shapes, each framed by a colorful geometric pattern, indicate moods ranging from the light pink of mourning to the bold orange and purple of defiance. The two stories are linked by a shared, wordless center spread featuring a kite motif from Masih's story. (The attentive viewer may note the symbolism in the choice to show Iqbal, in muted gray, as having let go of his kite, while Yousafzai, in full color, holds hers tightly.) The need to rotate the book physically in order to read each story adds a tactical element to the reading experience. Direct quotes from the young activists appear in red and purple respectively, and while author's notes provide background, this title lacks a bibliography of primary sources. Overall, a sensitive, age-appropriate treatment of a difficult but important topic.—Jill Ratzan, I. L. Peretz Community Jewish School, Somerset, NJ

Review
A master picture-book artist introduces quite young readers to two astonishing heroes of the world born in Pakistan...Winter, in impressive command of the page with her spare text and calm, rich, digitally rendered art, offers this difficult material unapologetically. As she often does, she distills the stories to their essences, conveying with very few words the fearlessness and the hope wielded by these children. Iqbal's and Malala's stories are presented as two separate tales, back to back. In a poignant double-page spread at the middle, edge-to-edge art shows each child atop a mountain. Iqbal's kite string has just left his hand; his kite drifts away toward Malala. Malala's kite string is still in her hand, and her kite reaches toward Iqbal...Brave and heartrending. (Kirkus Reviews STARRED REVIEW 10/1/14)

In a two-in-one book that readers can begin from either end, Winter links the lives of two courageous child activists from Pakistan—Malala Yousafzai and Iqbal Masih. The pairing works to good effect; it is as if Malala stands on the shoulders of Iqbal...Winter’s spare prose and simple, colorful pictures illustrate both children’s circumstances and the mantles they accepted. An introductory note to each story provides a much-needed event summary. Readers will be moved by both sacrifices, and many will want to know more...This is an inspiring introduction to two important young champions of human rights. (Booklist 10/1/14)

Author and illustrator Winter...once again tackles the topic of humanitarian activism amid political violence in this two-in-one picture book...Like Winter’s earlier works, simple sentences and repetition (“Still Malala speaks out”) give the story an accessible rhythm, and illustrations consisting of bold colors and shapes, each framed by a colorful geometric pattern, indicate moods ranging from the light pink of mourning to the bold orange and purple of defiance. Peretz Community Jewish School, Somerset, NJ (School Library Journal)

Winter (Henri’s Scissors) continues her series of illustrated biographies with a two-in-one volume...Naïf, milky-toned digital illustrations make the story’s terrors easier to bear...The thread joining these stories is the children’s thirst for education, no matter the cost. Readers who drag their feet to school may benefit...from an introduction to children who are desperate to attend. (Publishers Weekly October 15, 2014)

With an economy of words, unembellished language and her signature flat, child-centric illustrations, Jeanette Winter (The Librarian of Basra) creates a quietly magnificent tribute to two extraordinary human beings...The front-to-back story features Malala, the reverse tells the story of Iqbal, and Winter smoothly joins them together in the center spread. Malala's story opens as her would-be assassin descends upon her school van, then backtracks to tell how Malala spoke out repeatedly against the Taliban's ban on educating girls...Winter describes the Taliban attack, and Malala's miraculous survival, in simple, child-appropriate language...In the luminous full-page center spread, Malala and Iqbal stand on mountains, gazing at each other under a starry sky, flying kites that dance across to the other's side. Malala keeps a firm grasp on her kite string, while Iqbal releases his. Even as Iqbal's story saddens us, we must remember him in conjunction with Malala, living proof that hope thrives alongside death. Coupling the stories creates a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Winter has created a radiant, transcendent book. --Allie Jane Bruce, children's librarian, Bank Street College of Education Shelf Talker: The biographies of two children's rights activists, Malala Yousafzai and Iqbal Masih, together in one book; their stories balance each other to create a radiant whole. (Shelf Awareness, October 15, 2014 - STARRED REVIEW)

This picture book tells two stories (one side is Malala’s story; flip it over for Iqbal’s), introducing young readers to Malala Yousafzai and Iqbal Masih, two Pakistani children who fought for peace and justice and who both suffered violence...Winter tells each child’s story in clear, concise prose...Winter uses the imagery of a kite as both a metaphor for childhood and as a way to visually connect the two child activists. Mid-book, where the two narratives meet, a poignant double-page spread shows Malala, in vivid coral, flying a kite in a night sky, while Iqbal, shaded in an ethereal gray, can no longer hold on to his. Though both stories are painful, they can be a great place to begin a young activist’s education. (Horn Book, November/December 2014)

Muted tones and doll-like representations of the two heroes soften the tragedy of the stories, and the inclusion of kites as symbols of freedom are used to advantage as the ghostly Iqbal and vibrant Malala exchange kites on the transition spread between stories. With Malala’s recent Nobel Peace Prize award (made after this title’s publication), this work will fill demand for material at a primary-grade level. (Bulletin December 2014)

We are using this book in my second grade class to teach about culture, compare/contrast, and opinion writing. The text is highly engaging, and the students easily made connections to both Malala and Iqbal. This quickly became a classroom favorite, and several students have reread it on their own.

[Read by Kevin Kenerly]

The shocking nightmare story of a black heroin addict. -- Trapped in the festering sore of a major American ghetto, a young man and his girlfriend--both attractive, talented, and full of promise--are inexorably pulled into the living death of the hardcore junkie. It is a horrifying world where addicts will do anything to get their next fix. -- For twenty-three years of his young life, Donald Goines lived in the dark, despair-ridden world of the junkie. It started while he was doing military service in Korea and ended with his murder in his late thirties. He had worked up to a hundred-dollars-a-day habit--and out of the agonizing hell came Dopefiend.

Cookin' a slow death
By Reese Wife
"The white powder looked innocent lying there in the open, but this was the drug of the damned, the curse of the mankind: heroin, what some "smack," others "junk," "snow," "stuff," "poison," "horse." It had different names but the same effect. To all of its users-to all- to all of the dopefiends in Detroit ghetto - it was a slow death. - Donald Goines.

Before reading Dopefiend I never knew the importance of an addict having their `morning do' and unclogged works. I never imagined what it would be like to shoot dope in veins in places such as your neck, in your groin or between your toes or could even envision such sordid actions like sleeping with dogs for example. I never imagined what it would feel like having a monkey so heavy on my back that I routinely dug a bottomless pit of hell, or engaged in such acts that slowly took away my soul leaving only my shell.

Donald takes you through physiological minds from two perspectives, the drug dealer and the user. While the user is digging his exit with a slow death, the dealer believes he's holding the winning hand in the game. Dopefiend is a very bleak description of drug usage that takes place in the 70's in Detroit Michigan. It takes us through the transformation of several addicts and what begins and ends when you use heroin.

I enjoyed this novel from top to bottom; I liked how Donald would dedicate an entire chapter to a particular character giving us enough time to bond with what was happening during their downfall. His style of writing is excellent and very easy to follow. His vivid details made me feel like I was in the drug house helping Smokey find a vein, or running out of the local store with my floor model black and white TV screen. Should you pick up this street lit classic, you won't be disappointed.

I give Dopefiend a solid 5 stars.

"Dopefiend" basically takes you threw the life of two dope fiends a man and a woman. one from a poor family and one from a middle class family. it is a great book it would answer any questions that u would have about dopefiends. like : why would some one even consider shooting up ?? or why would some one risk there life?? why cant they quit?? why would they even start?? and many more questions. it is very detailed and grimy. donald goines keeps it all the way real about the life of a dopefiend.

BE DRUG FREE....
By mizzashmo2012
This is the third Donald Goines book that I have read and it is by far, the most gritty, graphic and gory one I have read yet. This man's descriptive abilities are so awesome that it makes you sick sometimes, but in a good way. If you are a person that has never really been exposed to drugs and the toll that they take on the user, and the way users live and breathe their next fix, then this is the book for you. At the end of this book, you will no longer have to wonder about junkie/dealer relationships or the effects of drugs, because Goines has given you all you need to know. Great read!

Awesome Reference Book
By Vanessah Howard
I've been using this book as a reference book--it is chock full of great examples of hair styles, clothing styles, and sections on how to design settings and scenes.

Objectives of this volume:
"To learn the basics of hairstyles and costumes that convey a character's individuality. To learn the tricks in drawing backgrounds as a stage-setting (scenery and time). To learn the techniques for designing a memorable character."

Get this book if you are having trouble with designing characters or hairstyles, or if you are having trouble with backgrounds and settings. This is not really a book for beginners--you should start with volume 1 in that case. I'm going to list the contents so that you can get a better idea of what's in this book.

Best How to draw Manga series
By xxtsuraraxx
One of the best how to draw Manga books out there. It's hard to find these anywhere. The american market is saturated with the horrible Christopher Hart books. This is a better buy over any other HTDM books! I own a lot of them.

Great Subject
By Ayris
This book has various hints and tricks that you rarely find in other books, and I appreciated them greatly. More often than not I feel manga lacks "life" and I think more people should give this book a shot to being a little blood into their work. I can't wait to breathe life into my own art with this tome as well.

Dashing Through the Snow: A Christmas Novel, by Debbie Macomber

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Savor the magic of the season with Debbie Macomber’s newest Christmas novel, filled with warmth, humor, the promise of love, and a dash of unexpected adventure.

Ashley Davison, a graduate student in California, desperately wants to spend the holidays with her family in Seattle. Dashiell Sutherland, a former army intelligence officer, has a job interview in Seattle and must arrive by December 23. Though frantic to book a last-minute flight out of San Francisco, both are out of luck: Every flight is full, and there’s only one rental car available. Ashley and Dash reluctantly decide to share the car, but neither anticipates the wild ride ahead.

At first they drive in silence, but forced into close quarters Ashley and Dash can’t help but open up. Not only do they find they have a lot in common, but there’s even a spark of romance in the air. Their feelings catch them off guard—never before has either been so excited about a first meeting. But the two are in for more twists and turns along the way as they rescue a lost puppy, run into petty thieves, and even get caught up in a case of mistaken identity. Though Ashley and Dash may never reach Seattle in time for Christmas, the season is still full of surprises—and their greatest wishes may yet come true.

Chapter One

“What? Are you kidding?” Ashley Davison couldn’t believe what she was hearing. The reservation clerk for Highland Airlines glanced up nervously. “I’m sorry, but I can’t sell you a ticket to Seattle. If you’d kindly step aside and wait a few minutes—”

“Can’t or won’t?” Ashley cut in, growing more frustrated and worried by the minute. She drew in a deep breath in an effort to control her patience. The woman behind the desk, whose name tag identified her as Stephanie, was clearly having a bad day. Getting upset with her, Ashley realized, wasn’t going to help the situation. She made a determined effort to lower her voice and remain cool-headed.

“I . . . I can’t. I’m sorry . . .”

Ashley refused to take no for an answer. Surprising her mother by flying home for Christmas was too important. “I understand getting a ticket to Seattle three days before Christmas is pushing my luck,” she said, doing her best to appear calm and composed. “If I’d been able to book a seat sooner, I would have. Getting Christmas off from work was a complete surprise. I attend graduate school and I also work at a diner. I hated to miss the holidays with my mother, but I didn’t have any choice. She’s a widow and my brother lives in Texas and can’t get home for Christmas, so there’s only me.” Perhaps if the reservation clerk knew her story, she might reconsider the can’t sell you a ticket part of this discussion.

“Then my boss decided to close the diner between Christmas and New Year’s for renovations after the refrigeration unit broke, and then he thought he may as well get a new deep fryer, too, so it just made sense to close down. All this happened at the very last minute, and because he felt so bad he gave me a Christmas bonus so I could fly home.”

“I’m so sorry . . .” Stephanie said again, looking nervous. “If you’d kindly move aside and wait a few minutes.”

“I haven’t seen my mother since last August,” Ashley continued, refusing to give up easily. “I wanted to surprise her. It would mean the world to both of us to be together over the holidays. Would you please look again? I’ll take any seat, any time of the day or night.”

Stephanie didn’t so much as glance down at her computer screen with even a pretense of trying to accommodate her. “I can’t . . . I wish I could, but I can’t.”

Ashley couldn’t help wonder what was up with this can’t business. That made it all the more nonsensical.

“You can’t,” she repeated. “There must be more of an explanation than that. It just doesn’t make sense.”

The reservation clerk frowned. Her eyes roamed about the area as if she was looking for someone. That, too, was irritating. It was as if she was seeking a replacement or someone to rescue her.

“I believe you have your answer,” the man behind her in line said impatiently. He shifted from one foot to the other, letting Ashley know he didn’t appreciate her arguing with the clerk.

Ashley whirled around and confronted him face-to-face. “In case anyone forgot to mention it, this is Christmas. How about a little peace on earth and goodwill toward men? Be patient. I’ll be finished as soon as possible and then you can talk to Stephanie, but for now it’s my turn.”

In response, he rolled his eyes.

Ashley returned her attention to the woman at the counter. “If you can’t find me a seat on a plane to Seattle, I’d be willing to fly standby.”

Stephanie shook her head.

“All the flights to Seattle are already booked?” The man next in line blurted out the question.

Stephanie’s eyes widened as if she, too, was surprised he’d jumped into their conversation. “I . . . didn’t say that. I’ll speak to you directly in just a moment,” she said.

“Excuse me?” Ashley flared, forgetting her resolve to remain calm and collected. This was too much. With her hands on her hips, she stared down at the other woman. “This is discrimination. Just because he’s a man and good-looking you can dredge up a seat for him, but not for me?” This was gender discrimination. Where was a television crew when you needed one? This would make a juicy piece for the six-o’clock news.

Seeing that the line was getting long and the Grinch behind her wasn’t the only one with a short fuse, Ashley decided to drop the entire matter.

“Okay, fine, have it your way, but I think this is just plain wrong.” With that, she grabbed hold of her suitcase and with all the dignity she could muster started to walk away, feeling more stressed with each step.

“Miss, miss,” the airline employee called after her. “If you’d kindly wait a few minutes I’m sure we could resolve this.”

“No way,” Ashley refused. “As you’ve repeatedly said, you can’t sell me a ticket.” With that, she headed out of the airport with her dignity in shreds.

Ashley hadn’t expected it would be easy to catch a last-minute flight. She’d already tried to find an available seat online, without luck. For reasons she couldn’t understand she kept getting booted off the website. That was the reason she’d decided to come directly to the airport and try her chances there.

Naturally, flying home was her first option. But other modes of transportation were also possibilities. She could always try the bus or travel by train, if there was even one scheduled. The most expedient way to make the trip would be to drive. Unfortunately, her fifteen-year-old hand-me-down car wasn’t in the best of shape and she was afraid of it breaking down along the way. To top it off, snow was predicted. Under normal circumstances, snow close to Christmas would be ideal, but not in an aging vehicle. If she could afford . . .

Ashley stopped mid-step. Why hadn’t she thought of this earlier? She could always rent a car! The solution was right in front of her, the answer obvious. She should have thought about it long before now. And really there was no better place to rent a car than in an airport.

Perfect.

Reversing direction, Ashley headed toward the car rental agencies, traveling down the escalator, rolling her suitcase behind her. When she reached the rental area, all of the agencies displayed signs that stated all their cars had been rented. All but one. Ashley made her way to that counter.

The longer she waited in line, the more she fumed about the airline clerk who’d insisted she couldn’t sell her a seat. The nerve. And then to basically reassure the man in line behind her that there were seats available. That was discrimination of the worst kind, even if the guy was eye candy. Stephanie was clearly looking to do him a favor, which only served to irritate Ashley further. Truth be told, she’d noticed him, too. Hard not to, really. He was tall and stood with military precision, his dark appearance lean and strong. She suspected he was either military or former military. He gave that impression.

The line for the car rental agency slowly crept forward. As luck would have it, the very man who’d been so annoying at the airline counter came to stand behind her again.

It gave Ashley satisfaction to see he hadn’t been any more successful with Stephanie in obtaining a seat than she had.

“So Stephanie couldn’t sell you a seat, either,” she said, trying hard not to gloat.

“All she had available was standby,” he grumbled, fingering his cell.

Ashley would have gladly accepted a chance for a standby flight. It wouldn’t have mattered how long she had to wait. “Not good enough for you, I suppose.”

He glanced her way and frowned, his look darkening. “I can’t take the chance. I need to be in Seattle.”

“I do, too,” she insisted. “It’s almost Christmas.”

“This is for a job interview.”

“A job?” Ashley echoed. “And you have to be there right before Christmas?”

Instead of answering, he returned his attention to his phone, frowning once again. Apparently he wasn’t interested in making conversation with her. Fine. Whatever. That being the case, she wasn’t interested in talking to him, either.

Incomplete storyline, disappointing and too short , not up to usual standards .
By GB
I am an avid Debbie Macomber fan, having read 90 percent her current books published as e books. I preordered this and it arrived two days ago. I found the story Intriguing and different. I really liked her character development and for most part the story itself. However not close to one of my favorite books. It ended ubruptly , I sat their and felt unsatisfied. Overall I feel like this is Sadly not close to the caliber of her usual books. It needed a longer ending, more development of her main characters. I don't want to give anything away but even the main story line got resolved with no explanation. I feel like this book got rushed to complete for publication date .

Let's go for a ride
By MaggieP31
I love DM stories and most of her Christmas stories are so funny! She has recently added some mild "language" but it fits the particular character, so I can get used to that. This is one that I will keep and re-read each year. She remarked that her hubby gave her the idea for this one w/an off-hand comment: "wish I could be put on the no-fly list" ; ) lol I hear you, I don't really enjoy flying anymore, either.
