About the Author
Named one of TIME magazine’s “100 Innovators for the Next New Wave,” in 2002 Suzan-Lori Parks became the first African American woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize in Drama for her Broadway hit Topdog/Underdog. A MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship recipient, she has also been awarded grants by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She is the recipient of a Lila Wallace–Reader’s Digest Award, a CalArts/ Herb Alpert Award in the Arts (Theatre) for 1996 and a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. She is an alumna of Mount Holyoke College and New Dramatists.

Her numerous plays include Father Comes Home From the Wars (2015 Pulitzer Prize finalist, 2015 Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History, 2014 Horton Foote Prize), The Book of Grace, Topdog/Underdog (2002 Pulitzer Prize), In the Blood (2000 Pulitzer Prize finalist), Venus (1996 OBIE Award), The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World, Fucking A, Imperceptible Mutabilities in the Third Kingdom (1990 OBIE Award for Best New American Play) and The America Play. Parks’s work on The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess earned the production a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical in 2012. In 2007 her 365 Plays/365 Days was produced in more than seven hundred theaters worldwide, creating one of the largest grassroots collaborations in theater history. Her work is the subject of the PBS Film The Topdog Diaries.

Suzan-Lori’s first novel, Getting Mother’s Body, was published by Random House in 2003. Her first feature-length screenplay was Girl 6 written for Spike Lee. She’s also written screenplays for Brad Pitt, Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster and Oprah Winfrey, adapting Zora Neale Hurston’s classic novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, which premiered on ABC’s Oprah Winfrey Presents. As a film actor Parks has appeared in the fictional documentary The Making of Plus One, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009.

In November 2008 Suzan-Lori Parks became the first recipient of the Master Writer Chair at The Public Theater. At The Public, and as she tours the country, she performs her innovative performance piece, Watch Me Work, a play with action and dialogue/a meta-theatrical writing class. She also serves as a visiting arts professor in dramatic writing at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Holding honorary doctorates from Brown University, among others, Suzan-Lori credits her writing teacher and mentor, James Baldwin, for starting her on the path of playwriting. One of the first to recognize Parks’s writing skills, Mr. Baldwin declared Parks “an astonishing and beautiful creature who may become one of the most valuable artists of our time.”

A Masterpiece!

I had seen the first part at the Public Theater in NYC. Being able to read this magnificent play brought the experience back to me. Suzan-Lori Parks has written a masterpiece, soon to be regarded as a modern-day classic, I am certain! EVERYONE should read this play.

I love Guirgis, but I do not understand how this ...

One of the most singular plays I've ever read. I love Guirgis, but I do not understand how this did not win the Pulitzer. I love having a hard copy for plays like this, and the sleek and thematic dual front and back covers are a gorgeous addition to this unmatched play. It will live on as a classic long after Parks' death. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

About the Author

Larry Reithmaier is a retired aerospace engineer who, while at McDonnell Douglas and Rockwell International, helped design and develop the F2H, F3, F86H, F100, F101, and F4 jet fighters, the B-1B bomber, and the Apollo and Skylab spacecrafts. The author of several technical books on aviation, he has also written the Aviation and Space Dictionary, Mach I and Beyond, the Private Pilot's Guide, and the Aircraft Repair Manual.

Dr. Ronald Sterkenburg started teaching at Purdue University in 1999 after a 20-year career in the U.S. Navy. He is an author or co-author of 10 books and more than 60 publications in national and international journals and conference proceedings. The focus of Dr. Sterkenburg’s research is the repair of metallic and composite aircraft structures. He is a certificated A & P mechanic, holds an Inspection Authorization (IA), and performs the duties of a Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME).

As a surgeon, I think of this book as the "Gray's Anatomy for Airframe Mechanics." Yes, it's fundamental, but knowing the fundamental facts makes for good work.
It contains material every airframe mechanic must know in the first year of his apprenticeship, but it will be of inestimable value to the many persons who participate in the expanding field of "Build Your Own Pane," even the best kits require some mechanical know-how and the proper use of the proper tools
No book reaches seven editions without having proved of value to an audience of significant size. The two expert authors describe with the aid of very clear line drawings and illustrations the nature of the tools and how to employ them (also how not!); they describe the nature of materials (not fabrics), and fixation devices (screws, bolts, pins, etc.). To this is added "plumbing, and electrical systems, and then non-destructive testing (NDT) and corrosion.
Altogether there is a wealth of primary material which every pilot and aircraft owner should be familiar with, and one day might save him from unnecessary forced landings.

About the Author
A man of many names, Xu Lei or Nanpai Sanshu or Kennedy Xu is at heart only one person―a storyteller. Nourished by myths and legends told to him by his grandmother, when he was still in the sixth grade he wrote a 40,000-word story starring his classmates as the heroes. As an adult, he was certain he could never make a living doing what he loved but he was mistaken. A tale he wrote in his spare time and put on a blog in installments became insanely popular, a publisher put it into print, and Xu Lei’s story swept across China, into Hong Kong, Taiwan, and beyond, selling over 600,000 copies in its first month of publication.


Before he was thirty, Xu Lei had an income from royalties that reached $2.49 million and by 2011, he was named the second wealthiest writer in China. His suspenseful writing style and his quirky characters made readers hungry for his next book long before they had finished his latest offering. His books were turned into a comic book series in the U.S., Paramount bought the film rights, and in China, a movie based upon the series will go into production in 2015. Color corrections on steroids

Highly recommended. Suggestion 1: go to "modern color workflow .com" (no spaces). Dan M. has a short video demonstration. It is very helpful as a pre-buy. Don't worry, the "buy it" button comes back here). There you can download a free panel that automates and speeds up the correction in Photoshop. Also included are panels with extensive help on the panels and on setting correct color.

The basic theory is: First correct color, even small color casts. Then increase contrast, essentially making a better B&W and then change the blending mode to luminosity. Then color boost intelligently. Also, there are specialized steps that fix odd cases. Finally, sharpening. The sharpening action has 150 steps. By itself, it almost worth the price of admission.

Suggestion 2: Do not read this like a novel. The book's chapters are well organized. The second half of each chapter are difficult for intermediates. Read the first halves, and start correcting. Later read the more advanced sections. Skipping around is fine. Each chapter almost self contained.

Suggestion 3: go the the website, watch the videos, and download the files. They are "private", but they grant access easily. They supplement the book nicely.

As the other reviewer stated, Dan's other book are nice but not a prerequisite. This book is not redundant either. (I do not know how he can write another 400+ pages of new color theory. Especially since he "retired".) The more you bring, the more you learn.

Bottom line: this methodology allows you to do better correction faster than before. Forget the sliders and the autocorrect buttons, the PPW makes better images.

The videos are excellent, and Dan manages to surpress his basic feeling ...

Dan Margulis is the most curmudgeonly misanthrope you would ever want to meet. A face-to-face class with him is torture; I am torn between his disdain for everyone, and his ability to impart up-to-date color correction theory and Photoshop application. Having said that, this book is superb for the high-intermediate and advanced Photoshop acolyte. The videos are excellent, and Dan manages to surpress his basic feeling that he can't stand you. Go slow, stick with it, and you will learn a ton. I love the S.O.B.

Absolutely a Disappointment.

I am sorry to say this but this one of the most poorly written books that I have ever tried to read. The first thing that I noticed was the arrogance that Dan imparts in his writing style. There are too many instances where it is obvious that Dan is trying to convince the reader of the 'difficulty' that his techniques present. I believe that Dan takes pleasure in trying to confuse and frustrate the reader with pointless rabble that has absolutely nothing to do with the topic. Don't get me wrong, there is some excellent information in this book but as a reader I found that I had to endure too much to get to it. I have been a CS6 user for years and there is nothing that was presented that was 'revolutionary'. This book would be excellent if only Dan's ego didn't get in the way.

Lorraine Santoli's "Inside the Disney Marketing Machine" is a fun and FASCINATING look at promotional and corporate synergy operations within the Walt Disney Company during the era of Michael Eisner and Frank Wells.

The book follows the authors personal career path within the company to tell the incredible (and often humorous) tales behind the inception and execution of some of the Disney parks and studios most remembered publicity events, celebrations and promotions of all time. The recollections and perspectives of others who worked alongside Santoli are also included here.....adding valuable insight and fun.

While the first half of the book focuses on the company's promotional efforts to the outside public; in the second half we follow the author as she accepts the position as Director of the new Corporate Synergy program and is tasked with promoting the company within the company....and finding ways to get the numerous arms within it to work together for the benefit of all. The uphill battle towards accomplishing this is documented here.

In addition to many entertaining behind-the-scenes stories.....readers will also take with them some valuable knowledge on how to get individuals to work together towards mutual success and what can be accomplished with proper communication. It will certainly inspire anyone working within a team of any size or definition to consider putting into practice some of the very strategies responsible for awakening what was essentially a sleeping giant for many years and reviving it into the powerhouse Disney is today.

FULL of stories even Disney veterans may not have heard.

I got to work with Lorraine both at Disneyland and Disney Studios in the late '80s and much of the '90s. She was one of those cast members who was able to make work time feel like play time. A fantastic executive and a dear friend.

There were stories in this book even I had never heard.

It was a very significant time in the company – as the Eisner-Wells duo was transforming not only the product the company was putting out, but the very way in which things were being produced.

This book does an extremely good job of pulling back the curtain and taking you backstage and into meeting rooms where key decisions were made – as well as those times where someone in charge had an impulsive idea and ran with it without first getting permission to do so (all the way to the White House). That era at Disney is Harvard Business School material. It remains a testament to what creative people can produce when they are given freedom to create.

And no company (to this day) does it like Disney.

Business School-student or Disney fan – you will LOVE this book.

Should Be Required Reading in Business School

I just finished reading "Inside the Disney Marketing Machine" by Lorraine Santoli and strongly believe this book should be required on the reading list of every legitimate communications and business school in the nation. This book was a revelation. It clearly illustrates how the elimination of silos, the application of creativity, and the taking of a long-term view (instead of quarter-to-quarter) can result in considerable revenue growth and significantly increased brand value. There are valuable lessons to be learned within these pages for both small organizations and large corporations alike. If you are a marketer or a communications professional, do yourself a big favor and read this book. A little beneficial pixie dust might just rub off on you.
