About the Author
Jane McCann is Director of the Smart Clothes and Wearable Technologies (SCWT) Research Centre at University of Wales Newport, UK. Her research at SCWT concentrates on the application of smart and intelligent textiles for functional clothing in the areas of protective and corporate wear, performance sport and inclusive clothing design. She was the recipient of the ‘Misha Black Award for Innovation in Design Education’ in 2003 from the Royal College of Art.

David Bryson is a Teaching Fellow in the Faculty of Arts, Design and Technology at the University of Derby, UK. His research interests include the use of scientific photography and multimedia to support learning teaching and assessment in applied science, art and design.

A Renowned Master And Author At His Best: Still Current

Reuben Fine was one of the world's leading chess authors - as well as being a strong master himself -and was extremely influential and well-known. I bet if you asked 100 Grandmasters and authors, 98 would've heard of Fine. In this book, Fine emphasizes developing in the player the ability to analyze a position and to proceed accordingly. There are sections on mating attacks; combination play; how to handle superior positions, even positions; continuations of the openings; and transition to the end game. Maybe many of us think that the old books are outdated and stodgily written. Not so with Fine. I think that this is a clearly-written tutorial book, excellent for learning to plan, and more "solid" than say Silman's "How To Reassess Your Chess." If you see this available anywhere, BUY IT!

This volume by the estimable Reuben Fine, in my opinion, still ranks as the finest incisive overview of the Middle Game in Chess.

Since tactical motifs, combinations, and just plain not going periodically blind (as all humans do) are such key elements of the Middle Game, it is a topic that is especially difficult to write about in a useful manner.

The organization, thoroughness, and suitability to players at the club and middle tournament level are what makes this volume so outstanding. Written by one of America's finest and most underrated grandmasters, it is nevertheless completely lucid and full of practical insights that can benefit all players trying to improve their game.

The Best Middle Game Book

There are many good books on openings and the end game, but there are few good books on the middle game. This is the best I've read on the middle game. I never had an official rating, but I hold my won against "A" players. So I would say that this book is definitely useful for up to "A" players and probably beyond.

I used to play the openings reasonably well and could pull off some pretty neat tactical tricks. But if there were no tactical opportunities, I just drifted until the end game. But this books shows how to assess your position and what to make of it from there.

About the Author
Donaldson Chair in Operations Management at the Curtis L. Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. He is also the Co-Director of the Juran Center for Leadership in Quality and has earned an appointment as a Distinguished Teaching Professor. He received the B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering with high distinction from the University of Minnesota, MSIE University of Minnesota and Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Prior to joining the University of Minnesota, he taught at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, and was an analyst for the office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense. Professor Schroeder has received research grants from the Ford Foundation, American Production and Inventory Control Society, Exxon Education Foundation and the National Science Foundation. He is a recipient of the Morse Award for outstanding teaching at the University of Minnesota.

A great book for OM

I am OM professor for MBA and business undergraduate students. I have employed Schroeder text (different editions along time) several times. It is very clear and friendly for students. The last edition shows new structure and includes topics as Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Supply Chain Management, Theory of Constraints, among others. Each chapter has exercises and questions to solve. As previous editions, there is a OM business cases section, with new ones. The cases show a good complexity level, and let the teacher to choose the aproppiate level for the students group. Also, there is a text-web page, where one can find other resources. However, the text doesn't develop plant layout, plant localization, balancing assembly line, times study.

college textbook: operations management

This book was required for one of my core business requirements. The fact that it is paperback makes it much easier to carry compared to hardback books. I purchased it online with Amazon. It was delivered promptly right to my door, packaged properly and the book enclosed was in shrinkwrap, so it was delivered in excellent shape. Although there is a lot of terminology, it is easy to read as the words are not too crowded or too small on each page. The diagrams are a good visual to enforce understanding of concepts and "handshake" icons besides paragraphs to remind us of the importance of people skills. In addition, there's a recommended site on the inside of the back cover for practice quizes which I highly recommend before taking an exam!

I used this book for my MBA Operations Management class, and it explains everything nicely and the text is easy to understand. In addition, the book is soft cover like another reviewer said. The paper quality is good and it's easy to carry in a backpack. Strongly recommended as a textbook!

great help

Almost any substitution you need! And more than one substitution is usually offered. They even tell you how many mini-marshmallows make up a large marshmallows; that's helpful. No one wants to buy marshmallow creme for one recipe calling for 1/2 cup...and then wonder what to do with the rest. Instead, make your own creme with marshmallows of any size and some corn syrup...Voila! I also like the boxes beside some ingredients, showing ounces, grams, cups, tablespoons. THAT is most helpful.

After having this book for two years, I still find it a great help, referring to it several times a month.

Every Kitchen Needs This

I am so glad I bought this! I'm astonished at the number of ingredient substitutions, for foods I've never even heard of. But what has been most useful has been lists of substitutions for things like whipping cream or certain beans. It's helping me use what I have at home and therefore save time (fewer trips to the store) and money (using what I already have, so it doesn't go bad, and also not having to spend more money on special ingredients). It's also helping me prepare more meals from scratch, because lacking one or two ingredients is no longer a deal-breaker. For someone like me, who is experienced in the kitchen but still learning how to be more fluid and flexible and "intuitive," a book like this is essential.

I bought a second copy to give to a friend whose son was just diagnosed with some unusual food allergies. This will help her be able to prepare meals that will help her son eat in common with the rest of the family, and she is so excited to have this book now.

Great Resource for Amateur or Experienced Cooks

I really enjoyed this book, even though like others stated, some of the items were so obscure I had never heard of them! LOL. Saying that, I would still recommend it highly for anyone who cooks. I mean who hasn't started cooking and realized they did not have an essential ingredient. I looked up several of my favorites items to see if any of the substitutions were feasible, most were. Each of the ingredients in their reference book includes a description of the item, i.e. Durum Flour: finely ground durum (high-gluten) wheat.

One of the features I liked about the book is that some of the listed ingredients, i.e. butter and all-purpose flour, include substitutions "To Vary the Flavor" or "For Better Health". Many of the substitutions also include info on how it might affect your recipe. For example, if you look up Butter, the "For Better Health" substitution states: 1/2 butter and 1/2 vegetable oil, best "for baking, especially quick breads and some cookie doughs: reduce baking time slightly; baked goods will be slightly more chewy; use pastry or cake flour for lighter texture..." This kind of info is just the thing to help make me a better cook.

The final sections include ingredient tables for common foods and include direction of what they are best suited (cooking, baking, eating). Other tables include ingredients with characteristics of each variety and what can be substituted within the categories (potatoes, beans, pears, apples, olives, legumes, lentils, mushrooms and more).

I definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves cook.
