About the Author

Dr Stephen F. Bush, General Electric Global Research, USA
Stephen received the B.S. degree in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, the M.S. degree in computer science from Cleveland State University, Cleveland, OH, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Kansas, Lawrence.  He is currently a Researcher at General Electric Global Research, Niskayuna, NY. Before joining GE Global Research, he was a Researcher at the Information and Telecommunications Technologies Center (ITTC), University of Kansas. He has been the Principal Investigator for many DARPA and Lockheed Martin sponsored research projects including: Active Networking (DARPA/ITO), Information Assurance and Survivability Engineering Tools (DARPA/ISO), Fault Tolerant Networking (DARPA/ATO), and most recently, Connectionless Networks (DARPA/ATO), an energy aware sensor network project.

The team slogs through an 800-mile swamp and climbs passes over the Ural mountains, enduring dirt roads, mud, and icy rain. Feisty, sometimes brilliant first book about a journey across Siberia by bicycle. Jenkins, an editor for Backpacker and Summit, writes a leaping, impulsive prose that, for all its originality, should be whipped for its barbarisms: ``He lived with his faraway eyes crumpled in a stickwood wheelchair holding him and his medals very still in his backyard with his rosebushes growing tall as trees.'' In 1989, he tells us, he was invited to join three Americans (one a woman) and four Russians (two women) on ``the last great ride'' (Africa, South America, China, Europe, India, and Australia had already been done), 7,500 miles from Vladivostok to Leningrad--a journey to be filmed by Carl Jones, an American documentary filmmaker. Most of the team members were like Jenkins, born bikers obsessed with biking, often knocking off 90 miles a day through heavy weather. After the Americans met their Russian counterparts in Moscow, the team flew to Nekhoda, from where they would cross land twice the breadth of the US and go through seven time zones. At first the team was accompanied by a police car that tried to keep the Americans from observing the deprived lives of nearby Soviet citizens, but the bicyclists soon found themselves feted time and again by villagers following their progress on state-run TV. That Soviets live a hard life, with memories of Stalin hanging heavy, became clear to Jenkins; in fact, the Americans met Russians who had been jailed for five years for ``capitalism'' or for going into business on their own. Three of the fellow Russian bikers were not friendly and, tensions mounting, the team finally broke up on the last leg of its big ride. Mud, cabbages, sub-zero frigidity--altogether a super adventure that landed the team in the Guinness Book of World Records. hard touring

Get past the stardust memories of his childhood, and the offputting ode to an adolescent girl's breeze-brushed nipples, and
"Off the Map" becomes the finest, most insightful tour report this side of Thomas Stevens' classic Around the World on a Bicycle. Jenkins' prose is overwrought at first, obscured by foilshiny darkglittering adjectives. He needs an adventure to wear him down enough to write past his brilliance into truth. He gets there.

A couple months ago, I read Ian "Sandy" Frazer's Travels in Siberia, a fine and lovely book. The telling difference is in the thousand-mile roadless tract between Kamchatka and Lake Baikal. It is made of mud, "balota." Frazier crosses it in a sealed train car, feeling slightly ill. Jenkins and his party ride their bikes through it. He meets people, he talks, he drinks, he rides like the wheel's own bastard child. You can guess whose journey is the more enthralling.

Mark Jenkins does more than ride through the muck, begging for milk. He passes through Siberian lives in the Soviet era like a bee through poisoned pollen, carrying with him the beauty and the rage, the cruelty and the generosity, the unbelievable filth and privation. He hears songs that sustain lives, and hums them back. He partakes and communes, and brings it home.

This is a moving and beautiful book. No one who cares about the depth of experience to be found on a bicycle should pass it by.

The tallish paperback is nice, by the way, and it's on Kindle, too. In either format, it's a good gift, when you've already given Fournel's Need for the Bike.

Fascinating Travel Literature

I truly enjoyed this book. When I'm not reading fiction I like to read travel books. Obviously the subject matter was fascinating (to me, anyway) - a road bike trip across Siberia - much of which was essentially roadless; but this one was unique in a couple of ways.

First of all it was an unusual shape - the book. Tall narrow pages. Different. But more importantly it was well edited. This book could have been seven hundred pages but it was joyfully succinct. The author didn't feel the need to tell us everything that happened along his four or five month bike ride across Siberia; instead he focuses on certain interesting aspects of the trip and skips the rest. He follows Elmore Leonard's advice: "Leave out the parts people skip."

But the best part was the unique writing style. The author sticks to standard narrative style for the most part, but switches, at times, to interior monologue and even stream of consciousness - but just enough to remain interesting.

A fascinating work of travel literature - highly recommended.

Very Entertaining; Epic with Commentary on the USSR in its twilight.

Ran across this book when I was looking to take a break from Sci-fi books. Since I am a bicycle commuter, I found the idea of bicycling across the largest country in the world very interesting. Many assumptions I had were shattered as I read this book about traversing the USSR in the late 1980's. This isn't a day by day account of the trip but rather more like a week by week account with some details on the daily struggles. Much of the book is devoted to the author's interactions with the local populace in rural russia. The reader comes away with a solid understanding of the county as well as the difficulties of traversing russia's land ocean.

About the Author

Joanne Ryder has always loved pandas, starting with the very first small panda toy she had as a child. She has continued to be fascinatd by these rare and wonderful animals throughout her career as a writer. She is the award-winning author of numerous picture books, including A Pair of Polar Bears: Twin Cubs Find a Home at the San Diego Zoo; Little Panda: The World Welcomes Hua Mei at the San Diego Zoo; My Mother's Voice; My Father's Hands; Big Bear Ball; and Wild Birds. She lives in Pacific Grove, California, with her husband, Laurence Yep, who is also an author.

Dr. Katherine Feng was a veterinarian before a photo safari to Kenya inspired her to pursue a second career as a photographer and tour escort. When she traveled to China in 1982 for a memorial ceremony in honor of her grandfather, General Feng Yuxiang, she felt an immediate connection with the country. Her passion for wildlife brought her to the Wolong Nature Reserve, where she formed a long-lasting bond with the pandas and researchers. She now escorts guests to the Reserve several times each year. Dr. Feng lives in Durango, Colorado.

Delightful Read and Visual Treat for Your Children

I have 2 grand daughters: one is 3 years old and the other is 7 years old and after receiving it, I knew it was the perfect gift for both of them. The pictures are superb and will enthrall both the girls and the text can be read by the 7 year old with a bit of effort. And that's what I want; I want her to become an avid reader and also be motivated to try harder to improve her reading skills. Above the run-of-the-mill children's books, this book deserves the good review it got from the New York Times. Get your couch potatoes sitting upright and read along with them if you need to do so, they won't run across too many Pandas in their everyday life; and they (the Pandas) ALL belong to China, no matter what zoo you may see them in.

What a delight!

This is without a doubt the cutest panda book I've ever seen! I've always thought of the birth of a baby panda as a rare and wonderful event. Something eagerly awaited and then reported in the newspaper. But in this book, photographed at the Wolong Nature Reserve in China, you can see 16 baby pandas together! Wonderful photographs show the little pandas playing, eating, napping, and being cuddled by their panda mothers and their human caretakers. It's a great story and Joanne Ryder tells it perfectly. Her words convey the spirit of the place plus necessary information in a way young children can understand and relate to. Her love for these little bears come through in every word. I can't begin to describe how wonderful the photographs are. You'll have to see them for yourself. You're in for a treat!

This book practically screams "ADORABLE" with the gentle, informative text and fascinating photographs!

If you've ever been lucky enough to see a live panda, you are very fortunate indeed. A panda cub is an amazing sight, but "imagine seeing sixteen young giant pandas all at once!" At the Wolong Nature Reserve in China there are sixteen cubs. This is a reserve where all these pandas are very much protected and loved, not only by their mothers, but also by some very caring people. The cubs are very small, "fuzzy and pink" when they are born, but after several weeks they start to look like their mothers.

Many times pandas give birth to twins, but they can only manage to take care of one and that is when people step in to help out. The twin is tended for in a "panda nursery" and later the twins are swapped back and forth so they will each benefit from maternal care. When the cubs are "big enough to leave their nursery and their mothers," look out because here they come to panda kindergarten where they will have fun with new friends. They tumble and play together playing on their playground. They quickly learn about things like "snow is cold and very slippery." In this book you can watch them play as they go about their day in kindergarten with their pals.

This book practically screams "adorable" with the gentle, informative text and fascinating photographs. The set up of this book is quite simple, yet the reader will come away learning a lot about the young pandas at the Wolong Nature Reserve in China and their way of life. This book, in reality, has no age limit because everyone who opens its pages will be charmed from the first page to the last. The photographs superbly catch the personality of these young bears. In the back of the book are some "Fast Facts" about giant pandas. For example, did you know that "a newborn giant panda is the size of a stick of butter and weighs about four ounces?" Amazing!

An Absolute Must-Read

Frank Worrall is a prolific author that knows the game of football. His biographies on Luis Suarez, Gareth Bale, Ryan Giggs, and Chicharito are some of the best you’ll find when it comes to the beautiful game. He does great work for John Blake Publishing time in and time out.

But we have to say that his most recent offering, Jamie Vardy: The Boy from Nowhere, is at a whole new level and is perhaps his greatest work.

The story of Jamie Vardy is a popular one these days, but this one is a bit different and a whole lot better. A lot of time is spent on Vardy’s time in non-league and that experience clearly made him the player he is today. There is also a great discussion of the disappointment he faced as a youth when he was turned away by his local club; we’re sure that Sheffield Wednesday would want him today if given a second chance.

His story is so inspirational, very, very few non-league players make it to the Champions League or the English national team, but Jamie Vardy did and did so against all the odds. He’s an example for others to follow, someone who has overcome a life’s worth of obstacles to reach the peak of professional and international football.

This book also points out his indiscretions, doesn’t shove them under the rug so to speak. Those issues, which are isolated and in the past, make up just another set of obstacles. Vardy has since put the negativity behind him and is looking toward the future, his and the future for those like him. His latest project, the V9 Academy, gives back to the sport and gives other talented footballers the chance to make it big, Jamie Vardy big.

If you want to learn about Vardy and his background and career, then this is the book for you. You don’t have to wait for his autobiography to come out in October; you can simply enjoy this one now.

It’s a great story of doing the unexpected, along the lines of Horatio Alger or Rocky. I’m glad that Worrall and John Blake teamed up for this one. It is a must-read because it captures the spirit and journey of Jamie Vardy, the boy from nowhere that made it big everywhere.

Everything Networking....

Being a software architect requires keeping up to speed with the hardware and networking options that are available. I decided to go with this textbook to brush up on networking.

This book is intended to get you up to speed to take the CompTIA's Network+ exam. Throughout the book the author lists the CompTIA Domain/Objective Number being covered in the chapter and which section you'll find it.

After a nice introduction to networking chapter the book digs into the details with chapters Physical Layer Cabling: Twisted Pair, Physical Layer Cabling: Fiber Optics, Wireless Networking, Interconnecting the LANs, Introduction to Router Configuration, Introduction to Switch Configuration, Routing Protocols, Internet Technologies: Out to the Internet, Troubleshooting, and Network Security.

One thing that is really cool about the book is that it comes with some nice companion content. There is a demo of the Cisco CCENT Mind Share Game, Wireshark example captures, Net-Challenge software, and samples of other certification guides.

To all the instructors that are considering using this book in their class, I think this is the perfect text to introduce networking. The chapters start by providing a chapter outline, define the objectives, list the key terms, and then provide a nice introduction to the topic.

At the end of each chapter there is a large set of questions and problems. There is also a section review and test your knowledge after each section. If your students take the time to complete these, they will really be driving home the chapter's material.

There are a ton of real production pictures, product specifications, diagrams, schematics, and screenshots that help to paint the full picture of the subject being covered. Throughout the book the authors also list key terms in the margins. There is also a nice glossary of key terms near the end of the book.

This book is one of the best overall networking books I have seen. It introduces everything and also goes deep enough to provide a clear understanding of the topic at hand.

I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning about network and to instructors look for an excellent text book for their class. This book can teach the student on its own and they need no prior network experience.

Solid networking book for beginners, or refresh

This was the best networking bought I've bought that covers all the essentials, from a-z. It won't make you a CCNA or MCITP, but it will certainly get you on that path, if one of those is your goal.

Certainly not the cheapest book I've ever bought, as its more of a text book for a traditional class, than the typical book I've purchased, but it really is worth it if I.T. is a career you're interested in.

I've worked in I.T. for the better part of ten years, and this really has filled in the gaps in my knowledge. Since I've done mostly contract work, you're rather limited in scope in what you're brought on a project for, even though you might touch pieces of different technology to do your job, you never learn enough in depth to become an expert of sorts, as you're focused on your tasks at hand. This book is something I wish I had earlier in my career, and would again advise those new to the field, or those who've been in the field, but feel that they don't have the fundamentals down pat.

Many employers now expect their I.T. pros to know more than just servers, or just desktops, or just WAN.

I would highly recommend this as part of your library. As a CCNP candidate, I had to swallow some pride to go back to what many would consider a beginner's book, but it really is more than that.

Very detailed and easy to understand

I'm working on my Network+ certification and a professor for one of my CIS classes strongly recommended this text as it was easy to understand and provided you the information you needed to know to pass the exam. And he was correct. This text is detailed and very easy to understand. Provides all the information you need to know to pass the Network+ certification and also has practice questions to keep that brain of yours thinking. Highly recommend this text to those who are interested in getting their Network+ certification. Also makes a great intro book into networking. Heck, I think I may even get the Kindle edition just because it's easier to carry around a lightweight Kindle device vs a book, I also like to read laying down.

Path to Recovery

This very easy to understand book helps the families and friends of alcoholics come to grips with the fact that alcoholism is a disease and not a character defect. It is a 12 step program and has true stories told by Al-Anon members after each of the steps and traditions addressed. Members use this book in meetings where "principles are put above personalities" and anonymity makes "it a safe place to be". I was excited to receive this useful book that describes how the families and friends of alcoholics can have a program of recovery for themselves. Excellent handbook that can be used over and over.

Excellent Guide to Recovery

I am the soul non-alcoholic/addict in a group home for recovering homeless veterans, and I joined Al-Anon to get better acquainted with what my fellow housemates are going through. This book has been instrumental in that understanding PLUS it's a good book to follow for just ordinary life's trials and tribulations. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to improved their outlook in life and how to live it.
