How Turkey moved from state control to free market.

In the 1970’s, a Turkish film director made Seytan, a campy, micro-budget movie about a little girl possessed by the devil. Do you think it was based on the Exorcist? Well you’re wrong, it was an outright ripoff of The Exorcist! Ismael Metin Erksan, creator of Suzuz Yaz (Dry Summer) made this cardboard piece of junk, using a copy of the script, smuggled from the USA. Turkey’s government had this insane program to bar American movies from the country, then make their own plagiarized version in Turkey, so that 100% of the revenue would stay domestic. There was a Turkish Exorcist, a Turkish Superman, and I’m told there was a Turkish Jaws. How they filmed the shark scene, I don’t know, and the Superman ripoff features four different stuntmen holding on to a (slowly) speeding car. The bad guys run so slowly that Superman has time to grab them and throw them through the cardboard wall of their hangout.

This is essentially what Turkey’s economy was until the 80’s; low-quality domestic products, protected by tariffs. Years earlier, Ataturk started a policy of government intervention in the economy, mainly to increase industry and agriculture. The problem was, it made the economy dependent on the government. I guess Turkey was a lot like Britain and Argentina, with lots of state-owned enterprises, rather than a free market. At the same time, it wasn’t easy to get loans to start businesses, nor were there a lot of people willing to buy bonds or buy shares. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that a lot of modern economies would take off running.

In the second chapter, the authors credit the removal of protectionism with bringing the economic transformation. I shouldn’t say they blame the old tariffs for the problem, because a lot of small countries like Britain and Italy had tariffs. It was their only way to keep their farms in business and prevent the country from becoming dependent on cheap produce from the USA. However, there’s a point when a country needs to make the farmers compete, so I guess 50 years should’ve been long enough. The chapter also brings Islam into the argument, particularly the religious political parties. How they changed the economy isn’t clear, but I suspect that by having a multiparty state, the “old guard” loses power and becomes more receptive to new thinking.

One thing that isn’t discussed much in this book is the diaspora funding. How much of Turkey’s money comes from Turks living abroad, I have to wonder? There are sizeable Turkish communities in Germany and Australia; do they send money home? Prior to the 1980’s, did money sent home by Turks living abroad contribute to the economy? Bugra and Osman make it clear that foreign investment, heavy tourism, and bond sales would come around much later, so once again we see that funding was scarce in pre-1980’s Turkey. Also, there was a high level of socialism to the economy, similar to the John Maynard Keynes model. The country wasn’t exactly mineral-rich, so there wasn’t much to export, and they didn’t get into light manufacturing the way Japan did. Would that have strengthened their economy earlier?

I guess the main point of the book is that a government can’t prop up the economy forever, and at some point you need to get rid of the tariffs and make the business “leave the nest.” Britain did it in the 80’s, and so did Israel, South Korea, and many other small nations. From reading this book, I think Turkey made a great decision not to go on the Euro. It would’ve left the economy worse than that of Greece. Now that the Eurozone is a shambles, maybe Turkey’s currency will rise in value? I wonder.

About the Author
Michael Francis Pennock (1945-2009) was the author of several bestselling textbooks for Catholic high schools, including, Encountering Jesus in the New Testament, Your Life in Christ, Our Catholic Faith, and three recent texts to support the new US Bishops' curriculum framework. He remains one of the most respected names in catechetical circles.

Pennock taught theology for more than thirty-five years, mostly at his beloved alma mater, St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ohio. His students, numbering more than fifteen thousand, continue to pour out their remembrances and support for the man they called Doc Pennock.

Excellent introduction to Catholicism...ideal for RCIA

We have been using "This is our Faith" by Michael Francis Pennock in our RCIA class. Written in a simple and direct style, "This is our Faith" is an eminently readable and highly accessible introduction to Catholic teaching and theology. Pennock divided the text into four sections that parallel those of the Catechism: The Profession of Faith, focusing on the creeds; The Celebration of the Christian Mystery, which focuses on liturgy and the sacraments; Life in Christ, which emphasizes Christian morals; and Christian Prayer. Individual chapters consist mostly of Questions and answers--making "This is our Faith" sort of a FAQ for Catholics. Each question is cross-referenced to the Catechism. Curiously, the teachers of my RCIA class sort of discourage us from reading the Catechism. (Is that typical?) But I like having the cross-references so that I can follow up where the text doesn't provide enough detail. Pennock's theology seems sound and conventional, yet he reflects both traditional church teaching and current thinking. Anyone in RCIA ought to pick up "This is our Faith."

Great book to tell you what, perhaps not as great for why.

I thought this book did a wonderful job of explaining Catholic beliefs in a straightfoward manner. It touches on pretty much every topic that you could be interested in, and I especially like its question-and-answer format. I believe that one of the best aspects of this book is that, for the most part, you can skip around. If you just have questions about the sacrament of marriage for instance, you can just read that chapter to get your information; it doesn't depend too heavily on all the chapters before it (although everything leading up to it is certainly important also, specifically things like the basis of the Catholic faith)
What I don't feel is covered as well is the reasoning behind the beliefs. In many sections of the book, references are made to the bible as well as various papers the Vatican has composed. However, I feel that many of the topics warrant much more information about the history behind them, how certain decisions were made, etc. After thinking about it though, I think perhaps that is outside the author's intention for this book; I'm sure someone could write a book on the history of each topic alone.
Ultimately, this is a great no-nonsense book about the beliefs and teachings of the Catholic church. You'll have to look elsewhere to find out WHY they believe and teach it, though.

This is Not Our Faith

This is Our Faith by Michael Pennock which is based upon his earlier Seeker's Catechism which has received very poor reviews on Amazon is very, very weak and troubling. I would not recommend it to anyone serious about the Catholic faith. It is a very poor text, in many ways. They correlation between it and the CCC is very awkward at times, or other times, they just plain conflict. For example, the CCC states that the goal/objective of ecumenism is the reconciliation of all Christians to the Catholic Church. You will not find this anywhere in Pennock's book. In fact, Pennock, in contradiction to the CCC, states that the goal of ecumenism is: a common commitment among Christians to live out the gospel and to be open to the unifying action of the Holy Spirit." Or, in violation of USCCB instruction regarding catechetical instruction, Pennock caveats nearly every statment of faith with: "the Catholic church teaches"... or "Catholics believe.." lending the impression to the reader that there are other acceptable teachings that are just as valid as what "the Catholic church teaches." Most alarming, though, is his depiction of Christ. In the chapter "Jesus: Lord and Messiah", we are first told that Christ is compassionate, self-giving and humble, but Pennock doesn't get around to addressing his divinity until the last page and then only places it in a list of dogmas.

Similarly, when answering the question "What is meant by the 'real presence'?", Pennock states that Jesus is present in the "assembly", the priest, and "the word", but he lists Christ's presence in the Eucharist - what the Catechism of the Catholic Church calls the "source and summit of the Christian faith" - last. Pennock, has such a lack of zeal for the Catholic faith, that by reading his "catechism" he nearly sucked out all the zeal I had inside of me. This primary texts gets two big thumbs down. How did this book ever get a imprimatur???

I've been an event planner for 20 years but in only the first two chapters of this book, I was learning bits and pieces here and there and it's been amazing! The way the material is presented ties together everything I've done all this time without knowing the organizational strategies behind them. As an event planner, we're often behind the scenes but the info in this book demands us to step up front and be involved as a strong partner so that we're able to add strategic value to meetings and events. Great, great info! Can't wait to dig deeper as I go through each chapter!

An important contribution to our field

As an analyst for a large manufacturing company's ERP implementation, I was responsible for a very complex and critical area called Classifications. Classifications was the place where all products, vendors, or customers were grouped into buckets based on similar behavior. For example, if this company manufactured vehicles, there could be classifications for hybrids, sports cars, SUVs, minivans, etc. To better understand classifications, I dived into screens, help files, and actual database tables and after several weeks, completed a classifications data model. The model I produced was very similar to the data model that appears on page 224 of "The Data Model Resource Book Volume 3: Universal Patterns for Data Modeling" by Len Silverston and Paul Agnew.

This book contains a collection of patterns, which are general building blocks that could be used as the basis for just about any type of data modeling within any industry. Classifications is one example, and there are a collection of others such as roles, statuses, and contact mechanisms. Whereas Volumes 1 and 2 in The Data Model Resource Book series contained models for common business processes or industries, this volume contains patterns that cross through all processes and industries. Consistent with the series however, the purpose of this text is to save the modeler time so instead of starting from scratch, the modeler can start from a reliable and proven foundation. Realizing these patterns exist and making them work for your particular modeling assignment can result in a higher quality data model and a greater level of consistency within your organization.

A majority of the book is dedicated to chapters which describe how to model a pattern at different levels of generalization. Level 1 is the most concrete and this is where terms and rules a business analyst are familiar with are shown, such as email address and telephone number. Level 2 through 4 go through increasingly more generized levels with Level 4 being the most generalized. The Classifications example I encountered in the ERP package for example was a Level 3 model, very generalized so that it can be leveraged by any industry. The book makes an important point that there are situations where one level is more appropriate than another, and sometimes the modeler must trade the familiarity and business rule enforcement of a Level 1 with the flexibility available in a Level 2, 3, or 4. For example, a phone number and email address from a Level 1 model would be generalized into contact mechanism data in a Level 2 model. This extra flexibility allows for accommodating other ways of contacting someone that may not have been specified (for example, via a person's "voice over IP" or Skype number). The book also makes the point that sometimes on a single model you can combine different levels for the same requirement (i.e. a hybrid approach).

Chapter 1 introduces the concept of a universal pattern as well as the terms and symbols used throughout the book. The goals for the book are also clearly articulated, in addition to the intended audience and a summary of each chapter. There is a wonderful furniture analogy used to distinguish a universal data model from a universal pattern. Universal data models (the subject of the first two volumes of The Data Model Resource Book), are similar to already constructed standard tables and chairs. The consumer can obtain this furniture instead of build the tables and chairs from scratch. Similarly, the modeler can reuse an inventory or claims universal data model instead of building it from scratch. Universal patterns are similar to the dovetail joints of the furniture, common pieces that exist in already built tables and chairs as well as custom furniture. Universal patterns are the building blocks such as the roles and statuses behind any modeling project.

Chapters 2 through 8 each focus on a particular pattern. Chapters 2 and 3 focus on parties and roles; Chapter 2 on declaration roles and Chapter 3 on contextual roles. A party is a person or organization of importance to the business, and declaration roles are those roles that are independent of any business event while contextual roles are dependent on a particular business event. For example Bob the person can have a declarative role of `Doctor', yet when an insurance claim is filed, they can also have the contextual role of `Primary Care Physician'. Chapter 4 focuses on similar structures for relating data including hierarchies, aggregations, and peer-to-peer relationships. Chapter 5 focuses on taxonomies and classifications, and Chapter 6 on patterns for states that business concepts go through. Chapter 7 contains patterns for getting in touch with parties, such as those patterns for modeling telephone number and email address. Chapter 8 focuses on how to model business rules including the rule itself, the factors involved in the rule, and the outcomes of the rule.

I was impressed with the consistency and comprehensiveness of each of these chapters. These chapters follow a similar format of demonstrating each of the four levels of detail. Each chapter begins with an explanation of the pattern and a discussion of its importance. Then for each of the four levels, there is a section on the reason for the level, how the pattern works (with lots of examples), when the pattern should be used, and the weaknesses of the pattern. I found the charts and tables to be extremely useful in the text, especially the Summary of Patterns table at the end of each chapter.

Chapter 9 focuses on how to apply these patterns in many types of efforts including both relational and dimensional modeling efforts and both application and enterprise areas of scope. As with the other chapters, there is a great summary at the end on the strengths and weaknesses of patterns with each type of effort. Chapter 10 adds the human dynamics side to incorporating patterns, as success or failure is heavily connected with people's perception or trust. Four principles are discussed, that will help acceptance and usage of the patterns: Understand motivations and work toward meeting them, Develop a clear, common, compelling vision, Develop trust, and Manage conflict effectively.

To summarize, under every data model is a set of common building blocks, clearly explained in "Universal Patterns for Data Modeling". I would recommend this book for every analyst, modeler, or architect who is striving for a level of information consistency within their organization. Whether you are just starting your modeling adventure or have been in the modeling for decades, you will find these patterns invaluable tools for every modeling effort.

A Comprehensive Study of Key Data Model Patterns

Unlike the world of Object Oriented programming, there are very few pattern books devoted to data modeling. This is unfortunate because most business applications suffer from over-specialization & inflexibility in the data model, where change is very expensive. The few data model patterns books that do exist do not explore the depths of subject to the extent that this book does.

Based on their many years of experience, Silverston & Agnew chose to focus on the most common areas of interest (Parties, Roles, Relationships, Statuses, Classifications, Contact Mechanisms, & Rules) and offer a set of data model pattens for each. Each area has a set of "pattern levels" ranging from specific to general, listing benefits, drawbacks, & usage guidelines for each. The modeler can choose which pattern level best suites the enterprise based on perceived needs.

This book can be thought of as the "gang of four" book for data modeling. I would recommend this book for anyone engaging in any form of data modeling. You may not use the exact patterns, but it will at least serve as a catalyst for future thought.

Two surprises I didn't like

The text of this book was generally good - although it seemed padded out with a massive listing of model metadata. The book comes with a CD. The first surprise was, the CD does not include the Data Definition Language (DDL) for its sample models... there's an extra cost for that. My question to the publisher would be, what good is the CD you provide for free?

The second surprise is the illustrations. There are plenty of them, but they look like they were done in a primitive graphics package - not in an enterprise modeling tool. They author seems to have invented his own wierd set of conventions, including "foreign keys do not appear in the entities... that is duplicate information". Before you buy this book, take a look at the illustrations of the models. If you can live with the notation, maybe consider buying it.
