Grade 8 Up-It would be misleading to say that readers will enjoy this debut novel, but it is certain that they will be captivated, frightened, and profoundly affected by it. It is based on the true story of a 12-year-old boy who survived the massacre that saw hundreds of thousands of Armenians murdered after the Young Turks came to power. In 1915, Vahan Kenderian lives a pampered life that he has no reason to believe will ever end. But end it does, and in a brutal way. After the disappearance of his father and uncle, Vahan witnesses the murder of his two eldest brothers in the garden of the family home and, after a forced march, loses the other members of his family one by one. He faces hunger, destitution, beatings, and sexual abuse, and is forced to watch as others are killed or raped as he crosses Turkey in an attempt to escape this persecution of his people. Throughout these experiences, he develops, matures, and strengthens his resolve, at the same time-understandably-learning to fear the loss of anyone he becomes close to. When he finally reaches freedom in Constantinople in 1918, it is as though readers have, in some small way, endured these experiences as well, and come away stronger. If you're looking for a new piece of historical fiction to inspire students and ignite discussions, this is it.

Teachers, assign this book!

I am not going to waste anyone's time here and re-summarize the book. What I will say is this.
I am a 10th grade teacher and I assigned this book for the first time this year to my 10th grade World History students. The student reaction to this book was unbelievable.
Repeat: I forced students to read a book for a class and they loved it.
Actually it was quite unbelievable, both before, during, and after class the students were discussing, and arguing with each other over the book.
I even caught kids reading the book in the lunchroom and cafeteria, and study hall!
As a teacher my only criticism of the book is that it does not really explain why the Turks targeted the Armenians. To me that was the one thing this book needed but did not really have.
But the best way to sum up how thought provoking and good this book is is a quote from a 70-80 student who told me
"I normally do not like to read, but I loved this book."
A forgotten piece of history that needs to be read, and students will actually like!

Searching for a Home

I once read where the Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Carol Shields said that a great novel should follow the characters' search for a metaphoric home. Forgotten Fire does that, both literally and metaphorically, and the result is a masterpiece of a novel.
The novel's protagonist is Vahan. At the beginning of the novel, he is one of the sons of a very rich and influencial Armenian lawyer. He is twelve. The family's life is certainly one of luxury and security. Then, the Armenian Holocaust begins, though. Vahan sees brothers murdered, his grandmother shot, and his sister's suicide among other almost unspeakable atrocities. Eventually, Vahan is forced to try to run, and that results in his three year struggle to survive alone in a country torn by war and the hatred of his race.
There are so many things that make this novel great. First, the characterizations are wonderful as you see Vahan forced to grow into a man. It is also inspiring to see a person like Vahan moving ahead in life in such horrible conditions. The writing is so good; the prose flows smoothly yet the narrative is unflinching and unsentimental. The novel also has the ability to blow you away with one beautiful piece of insight or one loving human relationship amongst the chaos. This is one of the most powerful reads I've had, and I'm sure that Forgotten Fire will never be forgotten. It will survive to remind the world of the plight of the Armenian people.

A Masterpiece . . .

`Who does now remember the Armenians,' said Adolph Hitler in 1939 in reference to the impending Jewish mass murder. Certainly The Fuhrer hit the nail on the head. Where is the history channel episode on the Armenian genocide? Aside from Ararat, where are the great Hollywood films on the subject? And, at a profoundly deeper level, where, my friends, is the vigorous debate within Turkish society on the genocide . . . even today . . . the silence is deafening. Why such sensitivity about the truth; surely the events happening ninety years ago deserve reflection today.

As a child, one of the first books whose cover intrigued me was The Destruction of European Jewry by Hilberg. I read Night, marveling at Wiesel's poetry. I watched in awe Polanski's masterpiece The Piano and Spielberg's emotional Schindler's List. I saw the tattered number's burned on my cousin's arm, a memento of a concentration camp. The subject of `restorations' to the state of Israel in the 1950's provoked vigorous debate within Israel(and an emotional dissent by a young Begin of the future Likud party). But, the Israeli's accepted; more important, the Germans offered. Many would say this was a shallow restitution for the mass murder of six million, but a debated occurred, official acknowledgment was fact. In the case of the butchering of one and a half million Armenians . . . silence.

It is in this emotionally charged backdrop that Adam Bagdasarian's debut novel The Forgotten Fire occurs. First it is a well told story based on the verbal recounting of a relative's tape recording before his death. Painful to read because of the subject matter, The Forgotten Fire tells about the ability to withstand almost an imaginable degree of suffering.

There are moments of great emotion in the story. The writing, at times, reaches soaring heights. A wonderful example near the end is this excerpt:

`And then the current of the river began to slow; and that night, when we finally got into our beds and lay our heads on our new pillows, it handed us back to time and disappeared beneath us. `

There are many such examples with such emotional power. This is great storytelling; this is a story that needs to be heard.

Man, You Can

"Men don't cook." People tell me this all the time. That's a load of bull--we've been charring giant slabs of meat ever since we discovered fire.

The difference now is that we have better things to do. Why slave over a hot stove when we could be cooking up plans for a golf outing? Or warming up at the gym? Or making things sizzle in the bedroom?

Here's why: because sometimes you want a break from the local Burger-Rama. Sometimes you want a decent home-cooked meal.

Not worth it, you say? It is if you use the can. The can is fast. The can is healthy. It's even cheaper than that Burger-Rama mega-deal. The can holds the secret to every great guy meal.

When you come home from an insane day at work and open the fridge to find nothing but a slice of 3-week-old pizza, remember the can. Good for a clueless college student

I bought this cook book and 2 others like it for my 20 something young sons for Christmas. They were constantly calling me asking for recipes and cooking advice so I thought I would give them some cookbooks. These covered board books spell out every recipe in language a clueless teenager should be able to understand. Plus they are easy to wipe clean. There a pictures of everything and a grocery shopping list to help. The recipes are simple, easy and seems like they would fill up a hungry college student. None of the recipes require weird spices, foods or utensils --they are all user/student friendly. My sons has successfully tried a few of the recipes and didn't burn anything down.
I also bought a Man and A Tailgate plan for my sports nut.

Excellent entry point into the world of cooking

I bought this for my gentleman friend (age 56) who cooks meat on the grill but not much else. He was ecstatic. I was afraid he might be offended/insulted by the toddler style cardboard pages, but he was pleased that he could throw it (literally) in his truck and take it into the grocery store on his way home from work without destroying it. The food is surprisingly good and only requires the meat department and canned goods aisles, nothing else. Does not require any kitchen equipment other than pots and pans. Not exactly haute cuisine, but for someone who wants something other than drive through burgers and pizza delivery for dinner once in a while and doesn't want to spend forever trying to buy ingredients and spices and cook, this is an excellent book.

Great Book for the Beginners, or someone looking for simple, good meals

I bought this as a gift for my nephew and i'm glad i did. Its a great starter book for a young man that is new to cooking. The ingredients are simple, easy to find, and accessible to most. Its not a gourmet cook book by any means, but its a good book to help a young person get more comfortable with being in the kitchen and fending for themselves. I can see this book as being perfect for a teenager or a college kid making meals for themselves. I'm sure after mastering these recipes a person would probably graduate to more complicated and interesting dishes, and i think that this book provides that confidence and stepping stone to get there. Not that it ventures into that territory, but once a person gains that confidence that they can actually cook something other than a hot pocket that actually provides decent nutrition and sustenance such as the things in this book, they will be more willing to branch out to other great meals/recipes. Bottom line, this book is a great start for some one new to cooking, or looking for easy, less complicated meals that are simple to make.

I also bought the "Second Helping" follow up to this book at the same time and HIGHLY recommend it. I'm not saying that this book is bad, but I think the recipes in the 2nd Helping book are allot better and a little more appealing to my tastes. I highly recommend buying them in a pair. That is what i did. These books are STURDY. They come with those THICK pages like you would find in a kids book. So i'm sure you can prevent ruining the book with accidental splashes and spills, which fits right in a beginner.

I might buy another set for myself just to get quick and easy ideas for myself.

a great book for yourself or a perfect gift!

A lot of good "food for thought" in this book. Dr Lombardo discusses a few things that i should do everyday that i just don't get to do if i am busy. I am finding it really easy to incorporate some of the core messages of this book into my day when i feel like i am getting off-sides and need to get back to that "happy place". I liked this book so much and thought it had such a good message that i bought it for a few friends and family that i thought would appreciate it! they all did! Definitely worth checking this book out!!

I thought I was already happy!

I really wasn't in the market for a self-help book, if that's what you'd call it, when I happened upon this book. In fact, I consider myself to be a relatively happy person - with lots of good fortune, family and friends. However, after reading just a few pages from Dr. Lombardo's book, I really starting to think about some of the things she was saying and how much sense she was making. In a few days, I had read the entire book and I have to say, I probably think about something from the book every day. It's not like I read it intently or had to memorize parts of it. There were really just so many thought-provoking points and perspectives that stuck with me. I can honestly say, I didn't start out trying to be happier but I certainly ended up there.

simplicity works for me

this book reinforced what i knew works for me as far as being content, fulfilled and happy. and that is not to have too many irons in the fire, enjoy quietness, nature, family, exercise and eating healthy (ahem..most the time) i just read an article saying some young parents are on their phones doing stuff up to 11 hours a day, completely ignoring their children. pitiful. like i say the book made me proud of my choices to live simply. i know its not for everyone. since i retired, luckily at age 57, i have really noticed how tense people are and in a big hurry to go no where. i recommend the book. it's good.

Delicious sweet and savory pies!

This book has an awesome range of pies, from sweet to savory, breakfast to dinner to dessert and it also comes with lots of tips to improve your skills, like info on refrigerated pie crusts (always bake pies on the lowest rack on a cookie sheet) and how to decorate the crusts. I really liked the broad range of recipes, with cream pies, fruit pies, meat pies, egg pies, chocolate pies and lots more. I've already tried the Impossibly Easy Mini Thai Chicken Pies (huge fan of impossible pies here) and they were really easy with a little kick from the red curry paste. Since they are baked in a muffin tin, they would work well for lunches, too. The Mini Wedding Pies are another favorite, with their different fillings and tiny hearts nestled on top. Lots of new flavors show up, too, like the Raspberry Lemon Meringue Tart, I can't wait to try that one!

I highly recommend this book. The multitude of recipes are easy to understand and have beautiful photos of the finished items. I checked out this book from my local library and then decided that I had to have it!

This seemed to be a good cookbook that was hijacked along the way to promote Betty Crocker products, for example, it gives a good pie crust recipe and then proceeds to recommend refrigerated pie crusts in most of the recipes. If you ignore this, many of the recipes are excellent.

A good book for beginners

I bought this book because I needed to use GRASS and R to produce maps with the results of statistical analysis. Though I am an experienced programmer, I had never used R neither any GIS. The tutorials available on the Internet were enough to learn R, but GRASS was a brick wall.
After reading and trying the examples until page 200, I found myself able to work with raster and vectorial maps. Since I was completely illiterate on GIS, I learned in the book how the raster and vector data are organized, how to alter and combine maps and how to manage the vector databases. The sections about R and GRASS integration was very useful. Although it was of no particular interest to me, there are several sections about spatial analysis tools, 2D and 3D output, image processing and GRASS programing.
The book is not an exhaustive descriptions of the commands, which should be found on the GRASS documentation. It is more like a hands-on tutorial that makes you familiar with the system and the commands, even if you are novice. It will also be useful for people familiar with the graphic interface of other systems who need to start working with the command line.

OK Book, poor quality binding

The book covers many subjects broadly, from Remote Sensing, LIDAR as well as scanning historial maps. However, I found myself using the online users manual for the basics and step by step detail on HOW to use GRASS.

In addition, the binding of the book broke within 6 months, and about 25 pages fell out of the spine, with average use.

A very good introduction to the many capabilities of GRASS GIS

I waited several months for this 3rd edition of Neteler and Mitasova's 'Open Source GIS: A GRASS GIS Approach'. I'm not disappointed.

Pros:
1. The book is a major re-write of the earlier edition, and uses GRASS version 6.x - which has many improvements from earlier GRASS versions
2. It has tons of example applications, drawn and derived from an up-to-date sample dataset for North Carolina. Examples span the fields of hydrology, remote sensing,and a large number of standard GIS operations on vector and raster datasets.
3. It is well organized and succinct in its language.

Cons:
1. There are several typos.
2. Some of the examples may not exactly work on your own system - the authors acknowledge this, as each version of GRASS has some variations in dependent packages and libraries.
3. Some of the pages are not cross-referenced right.

To summarize:
I first used GRASS (version 4.3) in the year 2000. While I recognized back then how powerful GRASS is, I found it quite difficult to learn and to appreciate. In 2005-07, I revisited GRASS (version 6.0) for my dissertation research, and found that it had improved vastly. This book is an excellent way for readers to get a taste of how powerful GRASS 6.x is. It will be most useful for students and researchers who learn by doing - you will not learn GRASS (or any other GIS software) by just reading. Also, this book alone will not answer all your questions about GRASS - use the friendly and resourceful GRASS mailing lists for specific help with your own GRASS GIS projects.

Get into this book and GRASS GIS, only if you are willing to use the command line! If you are a programmer and are used to learning new languages/software, you probably do not need this book - the material on the GRASS website would be enough for you. If like me, you dont consider yourself a programmer but 'can do' when needed, this book will be very useful.

I hope that a more affordable paperback version of the third edition comes out!

Never teach your wife how to drive or help her to learn another language !!!!. We are meeting with our lawyers to get going with the divorce.....No just kidding !!!.
Thanks to the very good book which I bought from you, Español 2,000, my wife is coming along very nicely and will be able to speak Spanish soon (?).
