About the Author
Eric Coll is an international expert in telecommunications, data communications and networking and has been actively involved in the industry since 1983. He holds Bachelor’s and Master of Engineering (Electrical) degrees, and is licensed as a Professional Engineer in his home jurisdiction. Mr. Coll has taught telecommunications technology training seminars to wide acclaim across North America since 1992, and has broad experience working as an engineer in the telecommunications industry. He has worked for Nortel's R&D labs as a design engineer on projects including digital voice and data communications research and digital network equipment design; and on satellite radar systems; consulting on Wide Area Network design for HMO applications; and many other projects in capacities ranging from detailed design and implementation to systems engineering, project leader and consultant. In addition to being a Course Director for Teracom Training Institute, Mr. Coll provides consulting to the telecommunications industry, specializing in telecommunications technology R&D.

Exceptional Book

its an EXCEPTIONAL book. it explains EVERYTHING in Telecom in such plain easy to understand English. From Binary codes to how carriers perform COS and QOS by MPLS everything was explained thoroughly and easy language. Its a must for anybody that plans on dealing with telecom.

This book is a solid piece of work, comprehensive, and very high quality.

I understand it is used as a standard textbook at many organizations, ranging from the US Marine Corps Communication School in Quantico VA to Vertek in the green mountains of Vermont as well as by thousands of individuals.

25 years of knowledge in one book

This book distills 25 years of knowledge gained in Engineering school, working for some of the biggest names in the business and teaching hundreds of training courses on the topics. Amazingly comprehensive and totally up to date. I think it's a great book for someone needing to get up to speed, fill in gaps and as a day to day reference on telecommunications, data communications, IP, wireless, VoIP, MPLS and networking.

Helpful, but not what I was hoping.

This book could be a nice refresher, but mainly it seems useful to someone who is taking a signals and systems class, who is a already up to speed, who wants a little better understanding of the material then their textbook or professor provides.

I was hoping for a quick reference, that explains signals and systems operations step by step in a clear and concise manner. I wanted a book with some examples worked out and explained from beginning to end. Most of all, I wanted a book that included refreshers of the math required for each calculation. This book is none of those things. I've never read a "For Dummies" book before, but I took the name at face value. In truth, I found it helpful, but only because I was already familiar with the material. If I had been coming in without a long list of prerequisites, this book would be next to useless.

Beware. The files associated with the text are unavailable

I would have given the book one star but that would just be giving in to an emotional response. Honestly, the book appears from the onset to be a very solid text. However, the online content mentioned in chapter one that accompanies the text is seemingly not available anymore - the modules created by the author, i.e., python (ssd.py) & maxima (ssd.wxm).

For those of you that are hands on learners (like myself). The missing content that is provided to supplement the text, takes away from the overall experience, thus the two stars.

For what it's worth. I initially attempted to leave a message on the author's Amazon page. Amazon however prompted me with a message stating the page was not a recognized web page and failed to execute my message. That said, if I can get access to the associated files I would be willing to increase my rating.

High Nutritional Value

I've never particularly appreciated the "for Dummies" branding, it is unappealing and derogatory to me. However, there is no denying the marketing success of this series. This is the first "Dummies" book to which I have have been exposed... and it is surprisingly intelligent! I now see the title terminology is certainly cheeky, but not derogatory at all. It is simply a means of stated that the information within the book is meant for those that have had little exposure to the topic, a beginner perhaps. Signals & Systems for Neophytes, perhaps.

The information contained within is golden. The introduction is paced well with a quick brush up of fundamental math and a high level discussion of discrete and continuous time signals. Next the book lowers the reader into the topic of the time domain, which contains a bit of differential and difference equations. Don't worry though, everything is still manageable and presented in a clear manner.

The book then progresses into more difficult topics: line spectra, Fourier transforms, and sampling theory. Some topics may be a little much, but the reader will indefinitely be able to hold an intelligent conversation on the subjects after reading these chapters.

I can't help but give this book 5 stars. It's a complicated subject and 350 pages is not a lot of space to cover it. But all 350 pages are packed from edge to edge with signal nutrition. If you have a reasonable mathematical background, you are interested in the subject, and are ready to lay down a solid base of knowledge, this book comes highly recommended.

About the Author
Bank of America Research Professor of Business Administration Rajkumar Venkatesan teaches “Marketing Strategy” and “Big Data in Marketing” in the MBA, Executive MBA, and Global Executive MBA programs at Darden. Venkatesan’s research focuses on developing customer-centric marketing strategies that provide measurable financial results. Venkatesan’s research has appeared in several journals, including the Harvard Business Review, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science, Journal of Retailing, Decision Support Systems, Marketing Letters, and Journal of Service Research. He serves as an Area Editor of the Journal of Marketing. Many of his research publications have been recognized with prestigious awards, such as the Don Lehmann Award and the MSI Alden G. Clayton Award. He has been selected as one of the top 20 rising young scholars in marketing by the Marketing Science Institute and as one of the top 40 professors of business administration under 40 by Poets and Quants magazine.

Professor Venkatesan has consulted and taught in executive education programs on marketing analytics for global firms in the technology, retailing, media, consumer packaged goods, and pharmaceutical industries. For his work with IBM, he was recognized as one of the three finalists worldwide for the Informs Practice Prize Competition.

Before coming to Darden, Venkatesan taught database marketing, marketing research, and quantitative marketing models to graduate students at the University of Connecticut. There, he was the recipient of the MBA Teacher of the Year Award. He received his PhD in marketing from the University of Houston and his BE in computer engineering from the University of Madras.

Landmark Communications Professor Paul Farris taught at the Harvard Business School before his appointment at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business Administration. He has worked in marketing management for UNILEVER, Germany, and in account management for the LINTAS advertising agency.

Farris’s general research focus is in the area of marketing productivity and measurement. His work has been published in 10 books and more than 70 articles, appearing in professional journals and publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review, Journal of Marketing, Marketing Science, Management Science, Decision Sciences, Journal of Interactive Marketing, Journal of Advertising Research, Journal of Retailing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and the Sloan Management Review. Farris has coauthored award-winning articles on retailer power, marketing strategy, and advertising testing. He has served as an academic trustee of the Marketing Science Institute and is a current or past member of the editorial boards for the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Retailing, the International Journal of Advertising, Marketing--Journal of Research and Management, and the Journal of Advertising Research. His current research is on channel conflict and building coherent systems of marketing metrics. His coauthored book, Marketing Metrics: 50+ Metrics Every Executive Should Master, was selected by Strategy + Business as the 2006 Marketing Book of the Year.

Farris has consulted and taught executive education programs for many international companies. He has served on the boards of retailers, manufacturers, and software companies. Currently, he is on the board of directors of Sto Corp., a building materials company. Farris has also provided expert testimony in a number of marketing-related legal cases.

Ronald T. Wilcox, Ethyl Corporation Professor of Business Administration and Associate Dean of the MBA for Executives Program at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business Administration, teaches the required Marketing course in the MBA and Executive MBA programs as well as the elective “Pricing.” He also teaches in numerous Executive Education programs.

His research, focused on the marketing of financial services and its interface with public policy, has appeared in leading marketing and finance journals such as the Journal of Marketing Research, Management Science, Marketing Science, and the Journal of Business. His research and writing have also appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, BusinessWeek, Fortune, Forbes, and the Weekly Standard. He is a frequent contributor to Forbes. He is the author of the book Whatever Happened to Thrift? Why Americans Don’t Save and What to Do About It, published by Yale University Press.

Wilcox joined the Darden faculty in 2001. He was formerly an assistant professor at the Carnegie Mellon Graduate School of Industrial Administration and an economist for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
