Yet more wisdom cast down from high atop Mt. Seuss, this cheerful trio of tales teaches some valuable lessons in humility--thanks to a sharp-eyed worm, a bragging bear and rabbit, a fuzzy-tailed bird, and a couple hundred turtles led by their foolish King Yertle.

Yertle's story leads off with his attempt to build a bigger kingdom on the backs of his loyal subjects (literally). King of everything he can see, Yertle orders his turtles to stack up under him to build a towering throne. ("He made each turtle stand on another one's back and he piled them all up in a nine-turtle stack.") But a plain little turtle named Mack--stuck at the bottom--decides he's had enough. ("I know up on top you are seeing great sights, but down on the bottom we, too, should have rights!")

Following Yertle's downfall, a whiny girl-bird named Gertrude McFuzz wishes she had two feathers, just like Miss Lolla-Lee-Lou: "One droopy-droop feather. That's all that she had. And, oh! That one feather made Gertrude so sad." But even when Gertrude gets her wish--and then some--she finds that vanity has its price. Meanwhile, in "The Big Brag," a proud rabbit and an even-prouder bear duke it out in a battle of the senses, arguing over who's the best of the beasts, only to get their clever comeuppance from a wild-eyed little worm. This is one of my very favorite Dr. Seuss books. I had kids late in life, and it was a trip to randomly purchase this book at around age 50 and to recognize the stories and the pictures not from 10 or 20 years ago but from 1970 or earlier! Seems like I read somewhere that every cell in your body gets replaced at least every 7 years... I guess the oldtimers passed the message along to the new guys. Whereas I never liked the Cat in the Hat, this is a good book with good (and humorous) messages and fantastic illustrations that I genuinely enjoy reading to my kids.

By my bedside right now are Tolstoy & Seuss....when I tire deeply of Anna & her insatiable desire to self-destruct, Gertrude McFuzz comes into play....she is slightly less macabre (& she has a future)...
of course, a hybridised melding of the two characters would be totally frickin cool...
but, somehow Gertrude Karenina just doesn't have it.
Oh well, whatever the case...Seuss should be at everyone's bedside...and should be read aloud by one's lover, with beeswax candles lit....rose petals strewn about the floor....a Hennessey's in-hand...a silk kimono rumpled....it should be read slowly...with drama..and definitely in a British accent...try it....

Yertle in the Classroom

Many adults do not realize there are Dr. Seuss books for older children. Sadly few children are exposed to them. In a recent pretest, it was apparent only one of fifty students was familiar with this classic. Ted Geisel not only wished to teach our children how to read, but make them think about the world around them.

I use Yertle in my classroom to demonstrate two types of government. I challenge you to look up Dr. Seuss' "big books" and search out what he has to say to you and your children today.

About the Author

Peter H. Rossi (1921-2006) was professor of sociology emeritus at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, director of research at the Social and Demographic Research Institute, and past president of the American Sociological Association. Known as one of the most eminent of American social scientists, Rossi authored over forty books and two hundred scholarly articles. His works include Down and Out in America: The Origins of Homelessness; Just Punishments: Federal Guidelines and Public Opinion Compared; Natural Hazards and Public Choice;and Armed and Considered Dangerous.

Richard A. Berk is Professor in the Department of Sociology and the Interdivisional Program in Statistics at the University of California at Los Angeles. He also serves as the Director of the Center for the Study of Environment and Society. Dr. Berk has published on a wide variety of criminal justice topics.

good but not excellent

FOR THE WRITER, good but not excellent ..did not like the Nephrology at all, need review the CNS stroke has serious fatal mistakes in mangament. Where is the preventive medicine. ? ADD CHAPTER FOR THAT. Toxicology need additions. dermatology need additions too. where is ENT? shock is not well written. pulmonology is also need revision may be you need to take another help from another good teacher or somone who have a lot to add. you book is good but not excellent ...i liked the organization and short notes that make you remember quickly and finish the book from a to z in short time.

excellent book that has usmle world concepts in it.

This is a great book which when used with usmle world, improves your score by 30 to 40 points. it covers lots of concepts from usmle world and kaplan q bank . a must have in conjuction with the q banks. i highly recommend it. its compact and easy to read and so memorization is easy. great job Dr. Dhesi!!

has the potential of a great book, but still far from it

Spelling mistakes continue, even tho it's the second edition. Still disappointed and some of the information is incorrect, therefore, must correlate with another text.

The good thing is the organization and flow of the material is great. He covers a good deal of topics

I think it's best to avoid this book, it's better to use another book and go through the qbanks (Kaplan and Uworld) and add any important information yourself.

With no graphics to rely on, the story suffers from an overwhelming amount of dialogue but still offers a challenging mystery that will keep readers guessing. Elementary, my dear Iria.

If you aren't into illustrated covers (or Manga, for that matter) don't let the cover throw you. You need not fear harmless little Kunagisa Tomo or her blue hair (mosty). There will be so much going on in the course of this novel, you'll be far too busy to notice.

Likewise, if you are not accustomed to Japanese names, the book title and character names may seem intimidating. Don't let it get to you! You're a serious reader. No sweat!

Wet Crow's Feather, with its expansive mansion, is the exclusive island home of wealthy and powerful Akagami Iria, an heiress of 'highest pedigree'. And if she invites you to come, you get to vacation for free! Hell, she'll even pay you for your time! A great deal! There's only one little catch: only geniuses need apply. If you're the undisputed best at what you do -- a master artist; a savant hacker; a culinary prodigy -- or if your name has frequently been attached to words like 'laureate', 'Nobel', or 'paradigm shift' your cheque may already be in the mail.

Iria-san is something of a collector. Since she never leaves her island home, what better way to keep from getting bored than to surround herself with the world's best and brightest? And why not? She has money to burn. But given that only geniuses make the grade, college student Ii finds himself feeling out of place. He's accompanied his often delicate (but always freakishly brilliant) friend Kunagisa. *She's* an infamous computer genius; *his* presence is merely tolerated.

Maybe Ii is much more ordinary than the illustrious women he finds himself amidst -- an exiled heiress; a famed scholar; a master chef; a celebrated artist; an uncannily accurate fortune-teller/mindfreak; and, well, then there's Kunagisa.

However, when heads start to roll, the question isn't only 'who dunnit', but who among them possesses the skills to solve murder among geniuses?

Some writers are talented, some writers are addictive, some writers are renowned, and some writers manage to compile all these things and more into a neatly wrapped package that sells incredibly well. I say "some" because, well, let's face it, these types of authors are few and far between. If you want to shrink the list even smaller, try listing authors that managed to do all of the above with their publishing debut.

When I picked up Zaregoto, I knew very little about its author NisiOisin. I had only read a short work of his in a literary anthology once, and though not my cup of tea, his writing had proven captivating regardless. When I discovered that the American publisher Del Rey had brought out a mystery novel of his, I was very interested. Having read and loved the Japanese mystery novel GOSICK, I had high hopes that yet another young adult author from Japan could possibly breathe more life into an admittedly fading genre of the YA market.

The story of Zaregoto is told from the viewpoint of Ii-chan, a nineteen year old college student accompanying one of his friends, Kunagisa Tomo, a recognized computer genius, as she travels to Wet Crow's Feather Island to meet the rich and exiled daughter of the powerful Akagami Foundation. She, like a number of other specially gifted people from Japan, has received an invitation to come to the private island estate of Akagami Iria. Apparently, the exiled princess is bored and she wants to gather the brightest minds the country has to offer to spend time with her. Though Ii-chan wasn't invited, Kunagisa brings him along with her to the island anyway. There they discover a host of other talented individuals that all but perfectly match the definition of a "genius". In fact, with so many of these geniuses walking around that range in skills from cooking, painting, computers and even fortune telling, it begins to make Ii-chan feel a bit overwhelmed intellectually. He seems to be the only `average' individual around.

But then the unthinkable occurs. One of the guests is found dead after an earthquake - beheaded. With everyone a suspect, there's no knowing for sure who they can trust. As one murder follows another, Ii-chan discovers he just might have what it takes to figure out the truth - that is of course, if he isn't the next one to die.

Zaregoto is a thrilling, edge of your seat, logic bending tale of murder and the human psyche. Filled with a unique and varied cast of characters, excellent narration and abounding plot twists even long after the mystery has been solved, it is without a doubt a phenomenal read.

From beginning till end, this is a book that keeps you guessing at every page. Readers won't need much time to realize that NisiOisin has a literary style all his own. Whether it be the strange name choices (even by Japanese standards), or the narrative structure, this is a story that is both spellbinding and challenging. Though the book is obviously targeting the YA demographic, it is anything but "easy reading." NisiOisin's writing requires the full attention of his readers. Every conversation and every detail could be a clue or point for character growth.

Zaregoto takes a slower more methodical approach to the genre in the tradition of many of the classics. The mystery is gradually built one layer at a time and even the smallest of details is given adequate measure to be noticed. One of NisiOisin's greatest assets is his ability to write as much as he does and still make every word count.

When it comes to a mystery novel, the ending can and usually is considered by many to be the most pivotal point of the work. It's whether you discover if the author has what it takes to tie everything together in a way you never could see coming or fails miserably. Thankfully, I'm glad to report that Zaregoto not only succeeds in creating a shocking finale for the novel, but also in touching on the smaller more easily overlooked aspects of the plot that dealt with individual characters.

As with any piece of literature that is translated into another language, the adaptation quality can vary greatly; ranging from amazing to terrible. Through my reading I could find no noticeable faults with either the work or its adaptation. For the most part, this is a spectacular translation by Del Rey, especially when considering how challenging a writer such as NisiOisin must have proven to be.

In conclusion, some writers are talented, some writers are addictive, some writers are renowned, and some writers manage to compile all these things and more into a neatly wrapped package that sells incredibly well. If you haven't guessed by now, NisiOisin is just such an author. Not only was Zaregoto his publishing debut, it proved to be the first in a long series of books that would mark his still successful literary career in Japan. Now that his works are being slowly brought into the English market, one can only hope that more people will take the time to discover his unique sense of storytelling.

Zaregoto is Excellent!

I bought this book after reading Nisioisin's Death Note: Another Note, and just like that book, this one is fast-paced and very clever. The writing style is smart, quick and to the point, these characters don't beat around the bush much. The characters are incredibly vivid and unique. The Japanese names took a bit of getting used to, and the lack of "He said" or "She said" in the dialogue made some passages of extended dialogue just a little confusing to follow. (There were a couple times I had to back up a little to figure out which character was talking). All in all, however, the fact that Nisioisin cut a lot of that makes the dialogue flow faster and more naturally.
This Japanese author is brilliant and I can't wait for Book 2 to be released in English.

Not happy with the Kindle version.

I was happy to see a Christmas Real Book with contemporary christmas songs but I'm sorely disapointed at the Kindle version. They didn't bother to format it for Kindle. So I basically have a book with tons of half even quarter pages. A song that should be one page long is 4 half pages long. That's especially inconvenient if your actually using this book to read music as your playing because you have to turn it every 4 staves. Very upset and I'm going to see if I can get my money back for it. If you're a musician reading this book to perform, even just practice, Don't Buy It for Kindle! Just wait for a physical copy to come in the mail.

Lyrics are too small when used in Kindle app on an iPad Retina Display

I'm a working musician and have used the RealBook series for many years when I play requests of Standards that I might not have memorized yet. The RealBooks have transferred very well to the iPad format. I display them in PDF and have no difficulty seeing the melody lines and chord symbols.

The problem for me in The Real Christmas Book C Edition is the small size of the lyrics. They were absolutely unreadable from within the Kindle app on my iPad. No amount of tweaking with the Kindle apps settings helped in any way. I don't know if they would have been any more legible had instead bought the book through Apple's iBooks.

The solution that I came up involved six time consuming steps: First, open The Real Christmas Book C Edition within the Kindle app on my MacBookPro laptop. Second, use the Kindle apps display controls to make the music and lyrics larger while still having as much of the song display on one page if possible. Third, use the Screen Capture feature of Mac OSX to select the music and lyrics of each page while leaving out the overly large border surrounding the music staff. Fourth, convert and rename the resulting tiff file into a PDF document using Preview (in some cases had to create a multi page PDF doc from individual tiff files). Fifth, place the resulting PDFs into DropBox. Sixth, open the PDFs in DropBox on my iPad and re-open them into GoodReader the app that I use to organize and display music charts, and lyrics on my iPad.

This was very time consuming and if some thought had been given to the end user of this product, would have been unnecessary! I was able to process 13 songs total from this book to a readable state to use in performances during the Christmas season before running out of time. This worked out alright since I already have a large collection of holiday songs that are music only (no lyrics) to help fill up a gig. Plus there are many songs that I already know both the words and music to, so I don't need to look at the iPad at all.

Before next year's Christmas season comes around, I'll sit down and go through my six step process again in the hopes of adding to my library of Christmas songs where I can comfortably read both the music and the lyrics.

As a side note, the melody lines and chord changes in this book were very good and in some cases really hip, giving the player the opportunity to perform many of these tunes in a slightly jazzier style if desired.

Love the book!!!
It was delivered without delay and I've had nothing but enjoyment playing the Christmas classics I love the most.
This book in my opinion is a classic and a must have for any piano player of any age or experience level who enjoys The sounds if Christmas.
I've been playing since I'm 21; I'm now 52 and will continue for years to practice using this book!
